It traces its roots back extra than 125 years to the founding of the Boston City Hospital School of Nursing in 1878. Eventually evolving into a BS application at Boston State College in 1974, it became an autonomous school within the UMass Boston in 1982 and finally a college in 1987. The College is composed of two academic departments: the division of Nursing, which in the only publicly supported BS/MS/PhD nursing program in the greater Boston area; and the Department of Exercise and Health Sciences, featuring nationally recognized faculty. The College has more than 5000 alumni and includes a both state-of-the-art simulation laboratory (Center for Clinical training and Research) and youth fitness heart (GoKids Boston).

We have built a Second Life® infrastructure that allows faculty and students experiential learning, role-playing, and promotes social interaction, in a collaborative atmosphere in our distance education program. It furthermore supports immersion and presence, allowing real-time teaching and discussion that enhances the mentor/mentee courting in a simulated finding out environment. With virtual environments, we now have the option to create social and skilled relationships which have been the missing component of distance learning.

We provide information to nurses & potential nurses on nursing education and have recently seen a large boom in online training environments in the healthcare sector. This Second Life infrastructure is a very interesting expansion to the online training mode. Very exciting for nurse education distance learning!
May 4th, 2012 at 10:26 pmThis is? very good. It’s a bit light-hearted at times, but it hits a lot of the key points on why virtual environments are useful for simulation and learning. My only criticism is the comparing early on “second life vs real life” – as if doing something online isn’t real. A better dichotomy would be “physical vs virtual”.
