Question by John: I have a lg dvd home theatre system but i want to upgrade to blu ray, so i thought about getting a receiver?
but i wasn’t sure whether the speakers i have will work in it and what does the watts mean on the receiver, say like a 500 watt compared to a 400 watt will the speakers still work and i have a budget of about $ 600 so if you have any good recommendations that would be great thanks

Get rid of your old home theater in a box. Look at an Onkyo HT-S3400, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers for under $ 400 at Fry’s Electronic. Purchase a Panasonic Blu Ray disc player model BD-85 for around $ 100 and you have a nice system. Also you need an optical audio cable to connect your tv to the receiver so that you can hear the tv sound in surround sound when the movie is encoded with Dolby Digital. I own a first generation Blu Ray disc player from Panasonic model BD-10 which is over 4 years old and never had one problem in playing over 300 blu ray disc movies. Hope this will help you out.
What do you think? Answer below!
No – you have to buy a whole new system.
Those ‘systems’ are glorified DVD players with cheap attached speakers. The parts will destroy another receiver if you try to use them on other gear. The ability to swap out pieces is one of the many things you gave up for the $ 200 price tag of that system.
You also gave up the ability to add a external BluRay or Game or Media Server to it.
