Question by Ben: I have a Dell Optiplex 380 desktop and I need a 500 watt power supply to power it?
I have a Dell Optiplex 380 desktop, and I need a new graphics card so I can play some games with my buds. I already have a card picked out and it requires a minimum of 400 watts, and my computer only has 235 watts. All of the 500 watt power supplies i find are too big for my computer and can’t fit. Can someone recommend me one to buy or some way to make a bigger one fit on my computer.

Buy a new case and a new power supply.

Hi since you have a Dell based system, you need a Dell power supply. All desktop computers by Dell, HP, etc., have tweaked power supply voltages. There for a standard replacement PSU will cause errors. Here is one that will work, it is made by Athena Power and it is Dell ready. Click the link below to view it.

February 23rd, 2013 at 1:29 pmATX is a standard for power supplies and motherboards. Dell, HP and other OEM manufacturers, use proprietary power supplies that look like a standard ATX power supply, however the wires in the connectors have been switched and the voltage changed. Using a power supply not specifically made for a Dell computer can cause serious damage to your computer. And we have 4 models at this time made by Athena Power: a 400 Watt, 470 Watt EPS, 550 Watt EPS, and the new 550 Watt EPS 80PLUS Certified power supply with dual PCI Express video connectors.
