Question by bilmer_56: How to change a Passive Subwoofer to a Powered subwoofer in a Phillips Home Theater System?
I currently have a 1000 watt Phillips home theater system and would like to get rid of the passive subwoofer and put in a powered subwoofer. The phillips system does not have component audio outputs. It only has the two small speaker wires that go to the subwoofer. Please let me know how I can hook up a powered subwoofer to this system.

Unfortunately, many HTIB systems and other similar home theater package systems just don’t give you the flexibility that a modular system would give -the price you pay for budget-minded convenience. However, you should have an AUX OUT or an alternative AUDIO OUT that you may use as a SUB OUT. Even the CENTER OUT would work if you have one on your HTS.

Or, as a couple of options, you could either get a higher efficiency/performance passive sub if you just need more performance, or add a subwoofer amplifier to your existing sub.

I have some recommendations for excellent examples of powered (and greater performance passive) subwoofers at different price levels for you to put on your short list…

I thought the higher the watts, the better the system, but why are some 500 watt systems more expensive than the 1,000 watts? I know brand of course… but any other advice? I want a good system, but i have NO idea what the sound difference would be, and mostly when they are hooked up in stores I don’t like to turn them up loud because of the other customers….

Depends on several things:

Quality of the product – a Smeg&Grommit 200W amp is perhaps a lot cheaper than a Technics 100 Watt amp

It also depends on what you mean by watts.

RMS – True meaningful number
Music Power – This is a way of doubling the figure so it looks like a more powerful system.
PMPO (purely mythical power output).

The last one is a way for cheap products with perhaps as little as 20 watts RMS to pretend to be producing HUNDREDS of watts and manage to avoid prosecution.

ALWAYS compare like for like. Ask what the ampliers output is in RMS.

To my supprise, one got stuck in the bottom of the shaft. I stopped the unit and removed the piece. I cut them in quarters and started again. It worked fine. I found the reason the half apple got stuck. The shaft has a pyramid V shape at the bottom to keep the feeder bar from spinning when the unit is on I guess. Not necessary in my opinion. This is a well built unit. Stainless Steel and black. The pulp was dry, although there was a substancial amount after 10 carrots and 3 apples. It made 3 cups of juice. The anti froth ring does what is supposed to. I like the adjustable knob for the juice spout. You can close it to keep the juice from dripping out. This is a quiet but powerful machine. When you push the on button, it kicks a little to the left, but after that it doesn’t move like some reviewers have claimed. The 1000 watt motor and 5 speeds is great. Low RPM’s for soft vegi’s …
