The Endless Dodge – Why Washington Doesn’t Come Clean On The Downing Of MH-17

A screenshot of the buk convoy that supposedly downed flight MH-17 traveling eastward from Donetsk on the morning of July 17, 2016.

Submitted by Roberty Parry via ConsortiumNews.com (h/t Contra Corner blog),

A newly posted video showing a glimpse of a Buk missile battery rolling down a highway in eastern Ukraine has sparked a flurry of renewed accusations blaming Russia for the July 17, 2014 shoot-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 killing 298 people. But the “dash-cam video” actually adds little to the MH-17 whodunit mystery because it could also support a narrative blaming the Ukrainian military for the disaster.

The fleeting image of the missile battery and its accompanying vehicles, presumably containing an armed escort, seems to have been taken by a car heading west on H-21 highway in the town of Makiivka, as the convoy passed by heading east, according to the private intelligence firm Stratfor and the “citizen journalism” Web site, Bellingcat.

However, even assuming that this Buk battery was the one that fired the missile that destroyed MH-17, its location in the video is to the west of both the site where Almaz-Antey, the Russian Buk manufacturer, calculated the missile was fired, around the village of Zaroshchenskoye (then under Ukrainian government control), and the 320-square-kilometer zone where the Dutch Safety Board speculated the fateful rocket originated (covering an area of mixed government and rebel control).

In other words, the question would be where the battery stopped before firing one of its missiles, assuming that this Buk system was the one that fired the missile. (The map below shows the location of Makiivka in red, Almaz-Antey’s suspected launch site in yellow, and the general vicinity of the Dutch Safety Board’s 320-square-kilometer launch zone in green.)

Another curious aspect of this and the other eight or so Internet images of Buk missiles collected by Bellingcat and supposedly showing a Buk battery rumbling around Ukraine on or about July 17, 2014, is that they are all headed east toward Russia, yet there have been no images of Buks heading west from Russia into Ukraine, a logical necessity if the Russians gave a Buk system to ethnic Russian rebels or dispatched one of their own Buk military units directly into Ukraine, suspicions that Russia and the rebels have denied.

The absence of a westward-traveling Buk battery fits with the assessment from Western intelligence agencies that the several operational Buk systems in eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, were under the control of the Ukrainian military, a disclosure contained in a Dutch intelligence report released last October and implicitly confirmed by an earlier U.S. “Government Assessment” that listed weapons systems that Russia had given the rebels but didn’t mention a Buk battery.

The Netherlands’ Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIVD) reported that the only anti-aircraft weapons in eastern Ukraine capable of bringing down MH-17 at 33,000 feet on July 17 belonged to the Ukrainian government. MIVD made that assessment in the context of explaining why commercial aircraft continued to fly over the eastern Ukrainian battle zone in summer 2014.

MIVD said that based on “state secret” information, it was known that Ukraine possessed …read more

Do "Targeted" US Killings Of Militant Leaders Work? Not So Much

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, Taliban militants' leader

When Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour was killed recently in a US drone strike, we noted that experts cautioned that it would make local insurgents even less likely to participate in long-stalled peace efforts, and it would likely lead to an escalation of Taliban retaliation efforts.

Mullah Akhtar Mansour, Taliban militants’ leader

The key question around the US killings of militant leaders is do they even work? This is something the Wall Street Journal also pondered in a recent piece on just how effective US strikes on leaders of militant groups are in the long run.

On one hand, it does appear as though the killing of Osama bin Laden has hurt Al Qaeda; on the other, the killing of Mansour may not have much of an impact at all on the Taliban.

From the WSJ

Both the 2011 raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan and the targeting of Mullah Mansour on a Pakistani road were major successes for U.S. intelligence and the Pentagon.

Al Qaeda’s central command, a relatively tight international terror network now led by Ayman al-Zawahiri, has been in decline since bin Laden’s death. It has been unable to fully recover from the blow or to mount major attacks against the West.

But the experience is less encouraging for wide-scale insurgencies such as the Afghan Taliban. While such decapitations can provide a short-term gain, they rarely change the course of the conflict—and frequently backfire if not accompanied by a much broader, resource-intensive involvement of a kind the White House has been loath to pursue.

Unlike al Qaeda, the Taliban enjoy support from a significant swath of the Afghan population. The group’s military advances in 2013-15 weren’t impeded by the fact that its leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, was secretly dead at the time, or by the assassinations of scores of commanders.

In announcing Mullah Mansour’s death, President Barack Obama said his killing “gives the people of Afghanistan and the region a chance at a different, better future.”

That optimistic assessment isn’t shared by many, in the region or in the U.S., who closely follow the Taliban.

I don’t think it will weaken the Taliban, and it may strengthen them,” said Barnett Rubin, a former U.S. State Department official who worked on peace negotiations with the Taliban and who is now associate director of the Center on International Cooperation at New York University.

As we warned the death – which carried the added “benefit” of further infuriating Pakistan which accused the US of violating its sovereignty with the mission – will make peace talks next to impossible, while pushing the militants to an even more extreme fringe.

It is also far from certain that removing Mullah Mansour would make such peace talks—an avowed U.S. goal—any easier to resume.

The minister of aviation in the pre-2001 Taliban government, Mullah Mansour belonged to the original generation of Taliban leaders, was involved in the political outreach, and could influence field commanders. His successor named on Wednesday, Maulavi Haibatullah, is believed to represent a …read more

Hey Democrats: A Vote For Hillary Clinton Is Actually A Vote For Donald Trump

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Via TheAntiMedia.org,

With California finally mattering in an election season, it might be the final state primary before the Democratic race for president is set in stone. Regardless, recent developments have made one thing astoundingly clear: Donald Trump will almost surely defeat Hillary Clinton in a head to head matchup – and that’s why a vote for Hillary Clinton is a vote for Donald Trump.

It may seem crazy to many, but Donald Trump is now leading — for the first time — in an average of national polls pitting the presumptive Republican nominee against Hillary Clinton. These results come at a time when Trump hasn’t even started aggressively attacking her yet; after all, he just finished fending off over a dozen Republican primary challengers — a feat thought all but impossible by political experts the world over.

Trump is rising and Hillary is sinking, but this is not a new phenomenon for Clinton — she’s been sinking ever since she joined the race for the presidency. Operating almost exclusively on name recognition and gender identity alone, Clinton has seen her enormous lead in the polls over Bernie Sanders evaporate in the last several months, with some national polls even placing his popularity ahead of hers.

This should not be all that surprising in hindsight, with an unknown democratic socialist meteorically rising to catch one of the most well-known names in modern American politics. America is fed up with status-quo politics — and Clinton embodies this bad taste, which is now in a majority of Americans‘ mouths. But Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump don’t. The all-but-guaranteed Clinton presidency now faces a fight from Bernie Sanders all the way to the Democratic convention.

Clinton, like Trump, faces a major favorability problem. Well over half of Americans view her unfavorably, and her honesty and likeability ratings are close to record lows. She’s got an ongoing FBI problem (read: email scandal). Trump is running to the left of her on foreign policy, trade, and economy — and to the right of her on immigration. These are all issues that are resonating well for Trump and lackluster for Clinton, who has taken flack for everything from her cozy ties to Wall Street and support of NAFTA to the 1994 crime bill she helped Bill Clinton pass when he was in office.

Trump has only been the presumptive nominee for a few weeks, but he’s already overtaken Hillary in the national polls. Considering her utter lack of momentum and enthusiasm, it doesn’t take a political scientist to understand this equation looks like a sure defeat for Hillary Clinton.

Let me get this straight. Trump can beat Hillary, but he can't beat Bernie? So by voting for Hillary…you're basically voting for Trump?

How To Legally Scam The Welfare System

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

First, put down all sharp objects. Now, meet Edith Calzado – maybe the single most successful and productive beneficiary of government assistance you’ll ever meet.

As NPR's Planet Money's latest podcast “The Art of Living At The Poverty Line” explains how many Americans are taking advantage of the welfare system…

“[Today], We hang out with a woman named Edith, a single mother who makes $16,000 a year and yet managed to fund a vacation at a Caribbean resort with an interest-free loan from one of the world's largest banks. She is a fascinating woman, and you are going to hear all about her…

…she is perhaps the single most successful and productive beneficiary of government transfer payments you'll ever meet. Transfer payments – think of welfare and food stamps.

Some people in the country earn more than they need to cover their basic necessities. And the government taxes those people and gives some of that money to people the government thinks don't earn enough to cover their basic necessities. Those are transfer payments.

And there's obviously a really contentious debate about transfer payments. One argument you hear is that transfer payments just don't make economic sense, that they punish productive work by taxing it and then reward other people for not being productive. Some people argue that it takes away the initiative to go out and get a job if you know you're going to get this money anyway. And so the argument goes that everyone just ends up poor – the rich, the poor – that these payments aren't good for anyone.

…No, and this is an economic argument, not a moral argument. There is a moral argument that says it's fine if everyone is poor as long as we live in a fair society. So transfer payments make sense just on that. But there is also an economic counterargument as well, that transfer payments, if done right, actually improve the economy in the long run.

And this argument says basically, poverty itself is inefficient. Trying to keep your family fed while living at the margin, it doesn't allow you to develop your human capital. In other words, extreme poverty keeps you from getting the education you need to get a good skilled job that would help make you and the whole society at large richer.

…Edith Calzado is the poster child for that second argument…”It's wonderful. It's a – I said that God was in the middle of this blessing because I have big apartment. My son has his own bathroom – you know? I don't pay gas. I don't pay electricity. I can have my washing machine at home, you know? I can have an air-condition in all the rooms, you know? I pay less rent. This is the more important thing.”

Electronic Voting Machines & Why Voters Should Be Suspicious Of Every Election

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by Adam Taggart via PeakProsperity.com,

Long an 'exporter of democracy' to the rest of the world, there is ample evidence that the United States lacks even the most rudimentary, basic protections necessary to preserve voting integrity within its own borders.

Some of the evidence is circumstantial, some is statistical, and some is pretty direct and clear-cut. Taken together, a pattern that emerges strongly suggesting that ever since electronic voting machines were introduced in the United States, we’ve had a string of suspect election results that frankly are not consistent with a free and fair voting outcome.

This week, we're joined by Brad Friedman, election integrity analyst to understand better the systems and practices currently in place to collect and tally votes in America. As we gear up to elect our next president, it's clear that numerous concerns exist about the state of 'free and fair' voting in our country:

Trust is different than 'verifiable'. Trust, frankly, has no place in elections. There is no reason to ever trust anybody. We need to be able to verify all of this.

There are basically two different types of electronic voting systems that are currently used today.

One is the touchscreen system that people know about. They’ve seen those votes flipping and so forth. Those machines are, in fact, 100 percent unverifiable — period. I’ve asked the companies that make the systems many times, if they have any evidence whatsoever that any vote ever cast on one of those machines during an election, for any candidate or initiative on the ballot, if any of those votes have ever been recorded as per the voter’s intent, any evidence whatsoever. They have none — they are 100 percent unverifiable. Thankfully, many states are getting rid of those and they’re moving to paper ballots.

The problem, however, with hand marked paper ballots is that most of them are run through optical scan computers to be scanned. The problem is, they often don’t work. You can’t tell whether they have worked properly, whether they have accurately recorded the vote, unless you actually hand count the paper ballots — begging the question of why the hell are we using these optical scan systems in the first place. So when you have a paper ballot, at least it is verifiable if anybody bothers to do a hand count. But we don’t bother to do so in this country; almost never. When problems are found, often they are completely ignored.

So that’s why I’ve argued for years now that the most transparent and reliable way to run an election is to hand count the paper ballots at the precinct on election night publicly in front of everyone with the results posted at the precinct before those ballots are moved anywhere.

Short of that, it really is faith-based elections. We're trusting that they’re recorded accurately, even though we’ve got so much evidence that they often are not. I think it’s a crazy way to run a democracy if you ask me(…)

Bill Kristol Announces That ‘There Will Be An Independent Candidate’ To Sabotage Donald Trump

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Michael Snyder

Idea Follow Question - Public Domain

It has long been my contention that the elite are more than willing to do whatever they have to do to keep Donald Trump out of the White House.  There are many forms that this could take, and one potential option just became a little bit clearer.  On Sunday, the founder and editor of the Weekly Standard, Bill Kristol, announced on Twitter that there “will be an independent candidate–an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance.”  Kristol has very, very deep ties to the Republican elite, and so this is certainly not an idle threat.  At this point we do not know who the candidate will be, but some of the names that have been mentioned include Mitt Romney, John Kasich, Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse and billionaire Mark Cuban.  Of course dividing the conservative vote would be suicidal and would virtually ensure a victory for Hillary Clinton in November.  So why would Kristol and other Republican elitists want to do this?

That is a very good question, and it goes to the very core of how the game of politics is played in America today.

The truth is that the elite are accustomed to being in control of both parties, and that is why things never seem to change very much no matter who is elected.

But this time someone that the elite do not control has miraculously captured the Republican nomination, and this scares them to death.

So now the mission is to destroy the Trump candidacy at all costs, even if that means having the Republican elite sabotage the Republican nominee.

I wasn’t sure if they were actually going to pull the trigger on a major third party candidate, but Bill Kristol now says that this is absolutely going to happen…

Just a heads up over this holiday weekend: There will be an independent candidate–an impressive one, with a strong team and a real chance.

— Bill Kristol (@BillKristol) May 29, 2016

Of course Donald Trump was horrified when he learned of what Kristol had said.  He responded with a series of very angry tweets…

Bill Kristol has been wrong for 2yrs-an embarrassed loser, but if the GOP can’t control their own, then they are not a party. Be tough, R’s! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2016

The Republican Party has to be smart & strong if it wants to win in November. Can’t allow lightweights to set up a spoiler Indie candidate!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2016

If dummy Bill Kristol actually does get a spoiler to run as an Independent, say good bye to the Supreme Court! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 29, 2016

I would be upset too.  For the Republican elite to purposely sabotage Trump and throw the election to Hillary Clinton is seemingly insane.  This is something that Ben Carson commented on during a recent interview with Fox News

Former 2016 candidate and Trump backer Ben Carson, speaking Monday on Fox News, echoed Trump’s warnings …read more

Ben Carson: President Hillary Would Bring About "Tremendous Carnage And Death"

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

In a world in which everything has devolved to threats of Mutual Assured Destruction of the “if something does not happen then the world will end” variety observed most notably with the scaremongering campaign over Brexit in which David Cameron recently went as far as suggesting that war could break out should the UK leave the EU (as well as currency collapse, recession, and some of the worst parts of the bible), it only makes sense to take whatever works and run with it.

That’s what former GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson, and the first of Trump’s former foes to endorse him, said on Monday when he told “Fox and Friends” that America is like a “cruise ship” about to tip over “Niagara Falls,” unless Republicans rally around Donald Trump.

BEN CARSON: America is like a cruise ship that is about to go off of Niagara falls with tremendous carnage and deathhttps://t.co/cVRp45XbJq

— FOX & Friends (@foxandfriends) May 30, 2016

In other words if Hillary wins, nothing short of the apocalypse would follow according to the neurosurgeon.

“America, right now, is like a cruise ship that is about to go off of Niagara Falls with tremendous carnage and death,” Carson said: “What you have to do first is recognize the problem, stop the ship, turn it around and then move in the other direction.”

Carson also warned that Gary Johnson, the Libertarian Party candidate, and any potential third-party candidate that gets into the race are stealing the spotlight away from Trump because of “petty little differences.”

Carson’s bashing of the potential Libertarian Party threat continued: “A quarter of a century ago, another Clinton was running for the White House and it was the entrance of a third-party candidate, Ross Perot, that made it possible for him to win,” Carson said. “Now, wouldn’t it be ironic if the same thing happened this time? Wouldn’t we be smart to learn from things that have happened in the past?”

“I’m hoping that whoever that third-party candidate is will stop for a moment and think about what the implications are of allowing Hillary Clinton or someone like her to get in there,” he continued. “They get two to four Supreme Court picks and completely change the nature of this country and destroy the prospects for their children and their grandchildren to have the same opportunities that they had.”

Considering the Libertarian Party, in its current iteration, feels the odd urge to sabotage itself in the most disastrous manner, such as last night when the candidate for chairman decided to do a striptease on live TV during the party’s Orlando convention and got undressed to his underwear, Carson probably has nothing to fear from a libertarian party third party challenge.

Meanwhile, as Carson was predicting doom and gloom should Trump not win, across the Atlantic the most famous physicist alive today, Stephen Hawking, also chimed in on the US presidential race, when he called Trump “a demagogue who seems to appeal to …read more

"An Unusual Number Of Known Unknowns" – These Are The Key Event Risks In June

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

One of the recurring concerns voiced by Bank of America’s Michael Hartnett is that with May now in the rearview mirror, we are entering “the event risk month” of June (incidentally, over the weekend, the credit strategist presented several ideas how to trade said event risk, either bullish or bearish). Now it is UBS’ turn to reiterate the warning that June may see a spike in volatility due to “an unusual number of known unknowns.”

According to UBS, in June there will be “an unusual number of known unknowns from several sources. June 2016 is a month in which the number of event risks is particularly high. In our baseline scenarios we do not see market upsets, but the potential is there: Japanese fiscal policy; meetings of the ECB, Fed and BoJ; new ECB policy implementation; a German Constitutional Court ruling; the UK referendum; elections in Spain; and a decision on the FTT are all thrown into the mix.”

Here is the full breakdown, first in table format.

And then the chronological narrative:

1 June: Closing day of the Japanese Diet – new fiscal action?

We expect Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to announce new fiscal policy on 1 June – the closing day of the current session of the Japanese Diet. We think that the scheduled rise in the consumption tax will be delayed and a supplementary budget of ¥5-10tn could be announced. It is also possible that the Lower House is dissolved and new elections called.

2 June-16 June: Central bank meetings

On balance, we do not expect any change in monetary policy to be announced by the ECB, the Federal Reserve or the BoJ in June, but statements and guidance will be watched closely.

First up is the ECB on 2 June. The ECB will present its new staff forecasts at the press conference. We think the key challenge for Mr Draghi will be to not appear too hawkish amid rising oil prices and robust Eurozone Q1 GDP growth, and we believe it too early for the ECB to send strong signals about the duration of QE beyond March of next year. But much will be discussed.

After that, the FOMC will meet on 15 June. We think that it will wait until September before it next raises rates (in part because of upcoming event risk). However, the minutes of the April meeting and recent Fed rhetoric has kept this meeting “live” and expectations higher than they might otherwise have been.

We don’t think that the BoJ will announce a further easing on 16 June, but it will be a close call. We see a 40% chance that it does, and a 60% chance that this takes place by July. If conducted in combination with a fiscal expansion (see above), Japan would in effect be conducting a policy of ‘helicopter money’ and we would expect the polemic to increase in global markets on this subject

6-10 June / 24 June: TLTROs, and other ECB policy implementation

While we do not expect new …read more
