With A Historic -150% Net Short Position, Carl Icahn Is Betting On An Imminent Market Collapse

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Over the past year, based on his increasingly more dour media appearances, billionaire Carl Icahn had been getting progressively more bearish. At first, he was mostly pessimistic about junk bonds, saying last May that “what’s even more dangerous than the actual stock market is the high yield market.” As the year progressed his pessimism become more acute and in December he said that the “meltdown in high yield is just beginning.” It culminated in February when he said on CNBC that a “day of reckoning is coming.”

Some skeptics thought that Icahn was simply trying to scare investors into selling so he could load up on risk assets at cheaper prices, however that line of thought was quickly squashed two weeks ago when Icahn announced to the shock of ever Apple fanboy that several years after his “no brainer” investment in AAPL, Icahn had officially liquidated his entire stake.

As it turns out, Icahn’s AAPL liquidation was just the appetizer of how truly bearish the legendary investor has become.

* * *

As readers will recall, when it comes to what we believe is one of the world’s most bearish hedge funds, we traditionally highlight the net exposure of Horseman Global, which not only has been profitable for the past four years, it has done so while running a net short book. To the point, as of March 31, Horseman was net short by a record 98%.

As it turns out this was nothing compare to Icahn’s latest net exposure.

In the just disclosed 10-Q of Icahn’s investment vehicle, Icahn Enterprises LP in which the 80 year old holds a 90% stake, we find that as of March 31, Carl Icahn – who subsequently divested his entire long AAPL exposure – has been truly putting money, on the short side, where his mouth was in the past quarter. So much so that what on December 31, 2015 was a modest 25% net short, has since exploded into a gargantuan, and unprecedented for Icahn, 149% net short position.

This is the result of a relatively flat long gross exposure of 164% resulting from a 156% equity and 8% credit long (a combined long exposure which is certainly far lower following the AAPL liquidation), and a soaring short book which has exploded from 150% as of March 31, 2015 to a whopping 313% one year later, on the back of 277% in gross short equity exposure and 36% short credit.

Putting this number in context, in the history of IEP, not only has Icahn never been anywhere near this short, but just one year ago when he first started complaining about stocks, he was still 4% net long. Thos days are gone, and starting in Q3 and Q4, Icahn proceeded to wage into net short territory, with roughly -25% exposure, a number that has increased a record six-fold in just the last quarter!

What is just as notable is the dramatic leverage involved on both …read more

‘Public Servants’ – Who Is Serving Whom?

Average Compensation for Federal and Private-Sector Employees

Submitted by Matthew Bankert via The Mises Institute,

When was the last time you used a government “service”? Maybe you went to the DMV to get a new driver’s license, or maybe you signed up for new healthcare plan using Healthcare.gov (you’d better — or else!). Whatever transaction it was, there was a government employee on the other end — or as some like to call them, a public servant.

Though the public’s perception of the Federal government is near rock bottom, there is still a generally positive view of government workers. A recent post from the official White House blog asks citizens to consider “making a difference as a public servant,” knowing that your work would help “make someone’s life just a little bit better.” (Presumably, those who are not public servants do not perform work that “makes a difference” or makes anyone’s life better.)

There’s even a Public Service Recognition Week every year during May. From the president's proclamation on public service this year:

A Government of, by, and for the people is sustained only through the hard work and extraordinary sacrifice of millions of citizens willing to serve the country they love.

I am not interested in judging the hearts of government employees, but do public servants in reality make “extraordinary sacrifices” compared to everyone else?

Compensation

A study by the government’s own Congressional Budget Office (CBO) claims public sector employees earn more money and benefits than private sector employees, with the exception of those with a doctoral degree:

The study says Federal workers with a professional or doctoral degree make up 7 percent of the Federal workforce. Therefore, 93 percent of Federal workers earn higher salaries plus benefits than comparable workers in the private sector. I'm still waiting for the “extraordinary sacrifice” we keep hearing about.

The Cato Institute makes a similar finding: “In 2014 total federal compensation [pay + benefits] averaged $119,934, or 78 percent more than the private-sector average of $67,246.” Even the New York Times seems to reluctantly concede that state and local government workers earn more.

Maybe the word servant makes you think of a butler or maid in some grand European estate. They labor away at menial, inglorious tasks without much recognition.

What if most of the servants make more money than the family for whom the servants work. Would they still qualify as servants?

Services

If their compensation is not less than the private sector, some may say public servants provide more important services. Even here some doubts are warranted.

The average 401k is pessimistically forecasted by some to return 4 percent per year, while Social Security’s return on “investment” is less than optimal. For example, a single female turning 65 in 2030 will have paid $411,000 into Social Security and will only receive $371,000 in benefits. (For those of you not math savvy, that’s less than a 4 percent yearly return.)

Surely, the police are a government service bringing valuable security …read more

Citi: "Wage Growth Only For The Wealthy"

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Over the weekend we showed a Citi presentation in which Matt King laid out why he is growing concerned as the systemic tipping point approaches.

However, one slide deserves particular attention, the one in which King shows that job creation since 2009 has been largely bimodal, benefiting the two income extremes, or as he puts it “Chefs and CEOs, with not much in between.” But even more notable is the chart on the right which King summarizes very simply: there has been wage growth but “only for the wealthy.

Surely the Obama administration’s response to the above would be that King is merely “peddling fiction” and to just look at the tremendous success that is the S&P 500, trading just shy of its all time highs.

By all accounts, I was a real smartass as a teenager.

There really is no difference between the bully and the victim.
-Lady Gaga

By all accounts, I was a real smartass as a teenager.

One favorite and reoccurring smartass remark I remember well is that whenever my parents blamed something on “they” I would inevitably ask, who is they? The conversations would go something like this.

Mom: “I can’t believe how much we spend on gas. 95 cents a gallon! Unbelievable.”

Dad: “Well, you know how they are, they got to make their God-damned money.”

Mom: “Yes. I know. They just don’t care. Nothing we can do about it.”

Me: “Who is they? And do they make you drive that big yellow 4×4 truck and that Mustang with a 302 V8?”

Mom: “Stop being a smart ass. You know what we mean.”

I never really understood that my parents were behaving like victims. I just thought that I was a smartass. However, I now understand that I did adopt some of their victimhood mentality. Fortunately, not all of my role models as a child played the victim. Somewhere along the line I developed a self-reliance that I believe has allowed me to overcome most of my learned victomhood, and later I developed my sense of gratitude that seems to have enabled me to effectively recognize and overcome the remaining tendencies that still arise in me from time to time.

Most if not all of this personal growth was unconscious to me as it occurred over the course of about thirty years. I became aware of it only after frequent observation of the victimhood mentality in others, such as US Foreign Policy, Israeli Foreign Policy, Venezuela’s Presidents, my alcoholic brother, my problem customers, my former business partner, etc. My desire to understand victimhood behavior recently led me to read a book with a title that would have normally put me off, Real Love and Freedom for the Soul – Eliminating the Chains of Victimhood, by Greg Baer, M.D.

Here is the description from Amazon:

At the root of all our anger, our feelings of separation from each other, and our problems in relationships is our belief that we have been victimized: we believe we have been hurt, slighted, or treated unfairly in some way. In Real Love and Freedom for the Soul you will learn about this disease of victimhood. As you read Real Love and Freedom for the Soul, you will learn the real reason you often feel angry and resentful toward other people, how you can eliminate the anger that is destroying your individual happiness and your relationships, why businesses often fail, why so many of our children are angry and rebellious, the real cause of racial prejudice in the world, and how you can achieve a level of freedom and peace you never before imagined possible. With Real Love, nothing else matters; without it, nothing else is enough.
