I am running an elec. space heater that has 2 settings as my main heat source since gas is so high but am wondering if it will end up costing me just as much after all.It stays on the low setting.

If the unit runs consistently for an hour it will be cheaper on 1000 watt setting.
However, if it would thermostatically shut off after, say 10 minutes, on 1500 but would run 40 minutes on 1000 then it would be cheaper on 1500.
Per solid hour of usage though, cheaper on 1000.

If this heater has a thermostat to turn it off and on depending on room temperature, I don’t think there would be any cost difference between the two settings. If this heater stays “on” all the time, irregardless of the low or high setting, well, of course it will use 50% more electricity using 1500 watts as opposed to 1000.
If your electricity cost is 10 cents a killowatt hour, this heater is costing you 10 cents an hour to run at 1000 watts, and 15 cents an hour to run at 1500 watts.

A 1000 wattage setting will use up about 8000 watts in 8 hours, at the 1500 Watt setting you use an additional 4000 watts. If the 1000 watt setting makes the room comfy then go with it. Look at your monthly electric bill to see how much you pay per watt/Hr and calculate the savings against the gas per cu/ft you will use for the same period. Each area of the country is a little different as per usage.
