Question by : How much money should I spend on my second guitar and amp?
I have had my starting guitar for 4 years now and I am going to be making a band. I was looking at a fender standard stratocaster for about $ 500 . For an amp I was looking at a fender mustang amp . I don’t have a low price limit but I don’t want to spend too much money

I have a Fender Blues Junior. It performs well on its own, but also sounds great when mic’d through a PA system. It’s $ 500 at Musician’s Friend and Guitar Center.

If want a good deal on a guitar go to a pawn shop. You can find a lot of guitars, some of which cost thousand of dollars for less. If you have an iphone make sure you compare the price to get the best deal . I go to pawns shops a lot and they sell really good guitars. As for the amp I recommend the lunchbox because it is a 300 watt amp and it is the size of a lunch box. You may not find the amp at a pawn shop but you should get your amp new. Just haggle the price down enough to have the people sell it to you.

Don’t know where you are posting this question from. But if you are here in the US. give some serious thought to buying a used Strat. They sell for about half the price of a new Strat. The Fender Standard Stratocaster sells for $ 500 new. But you can get a used one in very good condition for anywhere in the $ 200 to $ 285 price range. I recently bought a used MIM Strat in Lake Placid blue for $ 200. The Strat is a workhorse. It holds up well. I have 92 through 95 MIM Strats that play was well as any new one.
The Fender Mustang II is a decent amp, 40 watts 1×12. It is a digital modeling amp so it is versatile. However for gigging, if you go with solid state, I would prefer more power. The Mustang III at 100 watts 2×12 would be a better choice. If you are going to gigging, I would think a decent tube amp would be a wise investment. Of course, you won’t get digital modeling. If that is important to you, then stick with the Mustang III. However, you might want to consider something along the line of a Twin Reverb. I think the 65 Twin Reverb reissue sells for about $ 1400. For a tube amp that is about in the ball park. The Marshall DSL would also be a good gigging amp and it will run about the same. A Vox AC30 is good and in the same price range. Buying used amps can really save you some bucks. For example, the $ 1400 Twin Reverb can be bought used for $ 800. But even used, good tube amps are not cheap. If that is out of your budget, then go with the Mustang III. It is a decent amp for solid state.
