Not ‘The Onion’ – Why Elections Are Bad For Democracy

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Following James Traub's mind-numbingly-elitist rebuttal of the democratic rights of “we, the people” in favor of allowing “they, the elite” to ensure the average joe doesn't run with scissors, “It's time for the elites to rise up against the ignorant masses.”

The Brexit has laid bare the political schism of our time. It’s not about the left vs. the right; it’s about the sane vs. the mindlessly angry

The Guardian's David Van Reybrouck, originally posted at The Guardian appears willing to take the fight for elite survival even further…proclaiming “our voting system worked well for decades, but now it is broken. There is a better way to give voice to the people…. you do not ask everyone to vote on an issue few people really understand, but you draft a random sample of the population and make sure they come to the grips with the subject matter in order to take a sensible decision. A cross-section of society that is informed can act more coherently than an entire society that is uninformed.”

Brexit is a turning point in the history of western democracy. Never before has such a drastic decision been taken through so primitive a procedure – a one-round referendum based on a simple majority. Never before has the fate of a country – of an entire continent, in fact – been changed by the single swing of such a blunt axe, wielded by disenchanted and poorly informed citizens.

But this is just the latest in a series of worrying blows to the health of democracy. On the surface, everything still seems fine. A few years ago, the World Values Survey, a large-scale international research project, asked more than 73,000 people in 57 countries if they believed democracy was a good way to govern a country – and nearly 92% said yes. But that same survey found that in the past 10 years, around the world, there has been a considerable increase in calls for a strong leader “who does not have to bother with parliament and elections” – and that trust in governments and political parties has reached a historical low. It would appear that people like the idea of democracy but loathe the reality.

Trust in the institutions of democracy is also visibly declining. In the past five years, the European Union’s official research bureau found that less than 30% of Europeans had faith in their national parliaments and governments – some of the lowest figures in years, and an indication that almost three-quarters of people distrust their countries’ most important political institutions. Everywhere in the west, political parties – the key players in our democracies – are among the least trusted institutions in society. Although a certain scepticism is an essential component of citizenship in a free society, we are justified in asking how widespread this distrust might be and at what point healthy scepticism tips over into outright aversion.

There is something explosive about an era in which interest in politics grows while …read more

Killing Trump’s "Elephant In The Room"

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Excerpted from Dilbert Creator Scott Adams' blog,

For months I have been saying mostly good things in this blog about Trump’s powers of persuasion, and mostly bad things about how the Clinton campaign does persuasion. And yet Clinton has a solid lead in the polls, assuming the polls are accurate. How can that be?

The quick answer is that Clinton’s side is totally winning the persuasion battle.

Confused?

Clinton’s side includes more than her campaign team. It also includes pundits, supporters on social media, and the liberal-leaning parts of the mainstream media. While the Clinton campaign itself has been notably weak with its persuasion game, the folks on her side have been viciously effective at branding Trump a crazy racist.

Nothing else in this election matters.

The persuasion kill shot against Trump is the accusation that Trump is a crazy racist. When you combine crazy and racist, you have a lethal persuasion cocktail. And that’s what the Clinton side has done.

The folks on social media tested lots of accusations against Trump until they found traction with the “crazy racist” theme in all its forms. And Clinton’s campaign team wisely amplified it.

Remember when social media was saying Trump wasn’t serious about running, or that he was a clown, or he was doing it for the money? Those accusations didn’t get traction, and Trump swept them away with his continued success.

But the accusations kept coming, one after another, until the combo of crazy and racist bubbled to the top, as measured by social media virality. The Clinton campaign recognized the crazy racist theme as the best approach and started hammering on it through a variety of “fear Trump” message. Fear works when facts do not. And “crazy racist” is totally scary. And totally working. You can test it for yourself by asking any anti-Trumper to list the top three reasons for disliking Trump. Some form of “crazy racist” will normally come out on top. Persuasion-wise, every other reason is just noise.

The facts don’t matter. Facts never matter. What matters is that the “crazy racist” label picked up enough confirmation bias to stick like tar. The Clinton team won the month of June. And unless something changes, Clinton will saunter to an easy victory in November.

But remember also that Trump always makes aggressive first offers before negotiating to the middle. I predicted a softening of Trump’s immigration proposals and you see that happening now, right on schedule. Those changes in his proposals won’t be enough to change the election results because facts and policies are meaningless for persuasion. Trump would have to do far more to shake off the crazy racist label.

I now update my prediction of a Trump landslide to say that if he doesn’t give a speech on the topic of racism – to neutralize the crazy racist label – he loses. There is nothing he can do with policy tweaks, debate performances, advertising, interviews, or anything else that would remove the tarring he received from the Clinton side. But a persuasive speech could do it.

How?

From Brexit Wounds To Buying Panic (In Bonds & Stocks)

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Record low bond yields, Brexit uncertainty, and the biggest crash in home sales in 6 years… BTFD you idiot!!

But “we're halfway there…”

Since the Brexit vote, UK's FTSE 100 is now positive and by far the world's best performing major stock market since Thursday's close…

China outperformed UK but of the 90-plus major equity indices in Bloomberg's screen, all the Bottom 10 are European…

Volume has been non-existent during the bounce…

US equities have retraced almost two-thirds of their losses (near Fib61.8% retrace in Dow and S&P…notice that both are now perfectly back to the Brexit bounce highs from Monday

Leaving Trannies and Small Caps worst since pre-Brexit still but bouncing back…

With futures showing better the bounce to some supportive levels…

And US equities completely decoupled from bonds, bullion, and cable…

Amid a massive short squeeze…biggest since 2011

VIX has collapsed in the last 3 days – holding support around the 50- and 100-day moving averages…

With the VIX hedge unwinds driving the fear index below its pre-Brexit lows…

Just in case you were not conmpletely convinved of what fucking farce this market is – here is NKE, which had a dismal report last night just had its best day in 4 months – swinging from down over 6% to up almost 3% (as index buyers lifted The Dow member)…

But while bank stocks have bounced ahead of CCAR, they remain down notably post-Brexit…

Treasury yields were mixed today… as 2Y continued to underperform the rest of the curve… but note that the longer-end underperformed late on today as chatter of rate-locks hitting the market ahead of a heavy calendar expected…

Driving 2s30s to its flattest since Jan 2008 (recession) but bank stocks didn't care…

But 10Y and 30Y neared record low closes…before bouncing late on (with 10Y >1.50%)

The USD Index slipped lower again…

As the post-Brexit Cable bounce continues…Despite being down hard from the 1.50 pre-Brexit level – the bounce has been imporessive off the 1.31 lows…seems like 1.40 brexit bounce may be target but today seemed to run out of steam quickly..

Against the weaker USD, commodities all rose on the day with PMs doing well early and then crude melting up later on…

Banks Are Spending Billions On Stress Test Preparation

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Just days ago we reported that the Federal Reserve trumpeted the fact that all 33 participating banks passed the latest stress test. Banks also spent a lot of money on consultants in preparation for the stress tests as well.

After failing the Federal Reserve's annual stress tests in March 2014, the WSJ reports that Citigroup hired multiple consulting firms, and spent about $180 million on stress tests during the second half of 2014 in order to address regulator's concerns. It turns out that banks are spending tens of billions in order to prepare for stress tests, creating quite a lucrative business for consultants.

Globally, banks spent about $29 billion on consultants in 2015, much of that expense went for stress tests in the United States and elsewhere according to ALM Intelligence. The $29 billion is a 77% increase from the $16.35 billion that banks spent in 2007, growing significantly each year since the financial crisis. While banks continue to dramatically cut costs in other areas of the business, consulting fees is not an area that is taking a hit.

The industry has blossomed because if banks fail stress tests, the ability to raise dividends and buy back shares are limited – and how else can that EPS be maintained and lower revenue if shares can't be purchased? Accounting firms and consulting firms have all built specific practices around stress test consulting, and even BlackRock sold forecasting help to about two-thirds of the banks taking the tests. Not surprisingly, there are even consultants offering advice on how to use other stress-test consultants: “Kick out the consultants” Novantas advertised recently, telling banks it can help them cut back.

Stress tests require the banks to quantify precisely how much money would be lost under different scenarios, which is a difficult task for some banks with large global footprints. Being that banks generally under invested in the ability to perform such an analysis before the financial crisis, money is now being spent in order to catch up.

JPMorgan last year had about 550 people working solely on the Fed Stress tests, with more than 2,000 employees contributing indirectly the WSJ notes. “It's like a whole new department at the bank” said Joe Sullivan, president of International Market Recruiters, who helps banks fill stress-testing jobs.

The test submissions include a “narrative” document the size of a thick paperback, describing what the firm has done, accompanied by thousands of pages of documentation. Some banks employ professional writers to write the narratives so the Fed will have fewer questions later on. According to the WSJ, building a stress-test program can cost banks $150 million to $250 million a piece.

Financial firms globally will spend $4 billion on stress-test IT this year according to Chartist Research, which is up from $3 billion in 2014 and is expected to incresae 15% in 2017. Forecasting models alone generally range from $100,000 to $1 million depending on complexity – “We offer customized and off-the-shelf models to help you calculate the stressed probability of defaults” …read more

FEMA Contractor: Unrest After 395% Food Price Spike Coming Soon

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by Claire Bernish via TheAntiMedia.org,

Preparations by various cogs of the national security complex, including FEMA, indicate a coming worldwide food shortage – and a resulting crisis marked by extreme civil unrest around the globe.

As Motherboard noted of two reports published previously by CNA Corporation, but which largely escaped attention, the world’s food supply could be insufficient to maintain even current populations much further into the future. And the crisis — which several factors indicate may already be underway — may begin to worsen considerably as early as 2020.

Employing a desktop game simulation of the conditions of a global food shortage, titled “Food Chain Reaction,” CNA’s Institute for Public Research brought together “65 officials from the US, Europe, Africa, India, Brazil, and key multilateral and intergovernmental institutions,” Motherboard explained. And the Institute, which oversaw the simulation, “primarily provides scientific research services for the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA].”

According to the website for Food Chain Reaction: A Global Food Security Game no commentary on Orwellian overtones needed — the “simulation and exercise intended to improve understanding of how governments, institutions, and private sector interests might interact to address a crisis in the global food system,” and took place in early November 2015.

“The scenario,” the description continues, “is set five years from today in a world where population growth, rapid urbanization, extreme weather and political crises combine to threaten global food security. The game’s players — high-level decision makers representing nations, international institutions, and the private sector — will collaborate, negotiate, make decisions, and confront tradeoffs while dealing with a chain reaction of consequences resulting from their actions.”

Participants received the briefing for the game through a mock TV newscast, which “challenged players to imagine a global food system under stress due to extreme weather and other environmental factors, urbanization and other demographic pressures, rising global food prices, and falling food stock levels.”

After receiving information specific to each participant’s national and regional geography and climate, players were also permitted to employ solutions to the game’s burgeoning food crisis scenario on “national, bilateral, and/or broadly cooperative” levels.

Divided into four rounds, the simulation found spikes in food prices up to a whopping 395 percent, driven by extended crop failures in key regions, resultant from the confused reactions by international officials, drastic changes in the environment, and skyrocketing oil prices — many similar factors, the report notes, that drove a global food crisis spanning 2007 to 2008.

Though, at the height of the simulation’s worst repercussions, the food crisis affected virtually every societal and governmental aspect — such as mass civil unrest and widespread crop failures in the planet’s ‘breadbasket’ regions — the Institute ultimately painted a rosy picture of economic and agricultural recovery.

But for as detailed and reactive as the scope of the game sought to be, several glaring omissions likely skewed both results and proposed solutions — and despite backing from the U.S. government, the simulation’s corporate …read more

Compound W

0629-luxury

I haven’t done many real estate posts lately, although, as an update to this one (in which an empty dirt lot was being offered for $10 million) I’ll mention that although the For Sale sign seemed to linger longer than usual, it was supplemented with a SOLD sign yesterday. So I guess the Chinese are still buying.

I’ve become quite inured to the lunacy of Silicon Valley real estate, so not much surprises me anymore, but I saw a full page color ad this morning in Gentry magazine (which is a free magazine they distribute around here, packed with a combination of real estate ads, for the tech zillionaires, and plastic surgery ads, for their vain spouses) that demands a post. So I’m writing it, you lucky so-and-so.

The color photographs featured the most blase, ordinary, McMansion style place you could imagine, but the headline was…….

Luxury. Compound. Now, when I think of a luxury compound, I think of a multi-acre property of a rich family with a number of fine-looking houses. It’s probably relatively remote, and who knows, it might even have some private security guards on the premises. Think of the Corleone residence on Lake Tahoe in Godfather II, and that’s a family compound.

What does not spring to mind when I think of family compound is what is being sold here, which is…….

0629-pavers

(Side note: I urge you to buy this house if you really, really like lots of paver stones on top of your now-inaccessible soil).

Now, I don’t smoke, but if I did, I might ponder the term “luxury compound”, look at the above picture, light my pipe, lean back in my leather arm chair, and ask: “Are you fucking kidding me?”

I’ve lived in Palo Alto since 1984, and I know the town very, very well. The location is on a very noisy, rather ugly street called Middlefield, and the house is constructed right next to a church that was built (cheaply) probably in 1940 or so……….

0629-church

The neighborhood is the kind you’d expect, with houses built in the 1950s that are small and were probably at the time very affordable for working class and/or middle class families. Here is the view directly across the street from the, umm, family compound.

0629-neighb

So, look, I don’t expect the good people of the real estate industry to be models of probity, but exactly how dumb do they think we are?

Who Said It? Bernie, Donald, Or Hillary?

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by Michael Shedlock via MishTalk.com,

It’s quiz time.

I will list a statement. You decide who said it.

The correct answer is either Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, or Hillary Clinton.

34 Statements – Who Made Them?

  1. I do not believe in unfettered free trade. I believe in fair trade which works for the middle class and working families.
  2. I will take on corporations that take their jobs to China.
  3. I think NAFTA has been a disaster.
  4. Instead of passing such trade deals again and again, we must develop trade policies which demand that American corporations create jobs here, and not abroad.
  5. TPP is a death blow for American manufacturing.
  6. I’m for free and fair trade.
  7. We need to bring manufacturing jobs back home where they belong.
  8. Globalization has torn down the barriers that have formerly separated the national from the international markets.
  9. The top priority of any trade deal should be to help American workers.
  10. I heard it about NAFTA. I heard it about CAFTA. I heard it about permanent normal trade relations with China. Here is the fact. Since 2001, we have lost almost 60,000 factories and millions of good-paying jobs.
  11. Maybe we should have a trade policy which represents the working families of this country, that rebuilds our manufacturing base, not than just representing the CEOs of large multinational corporations.
  12. We must end our disastrous trade policies (NAFTA, CAFTA, PNTR with China, etc.) which enable corporate America to shut down plants in this country and move to China and other low-wage countries.
  13. This wave of globalization has wiped out our middle class.
  14. NAFTA was the worst trade deal in history, and China’s entrance into the World Trade Organization has enabled the greatest jobs theft in history.
  15. I think corporate America has to start investing in this country and create decent paying jobs here.
  16. It is a lot cheaper for the American companies to set up plants in China, hire Chinese workers at 50 cents an hour, 75 cents an hour, whatever it is, and have them build the product for the Chinese markets than it is to pay American workers $15 an hour, $20 an hour, provide health insurance, deal with the union, deal with the environment.
  17. Connect the dots. Our current trade deficit is causing the loss of over 2 million jobs. Over the last 20 years, while the US has run up over a trillion dollars in trade deficits, millions of American workers have been thrown into the streets.
  18. The function of trade agreements like NAFTA is to make it easier for American companies to move abroad, and to force our workers to compete against desperate people in the Third World.
  19. Our current record-breaking merchandise trade deficit of $112 billion is costing us over 2 million decent paying jobs. NAFTA, GATT, and Most Favored Nation status with China must be repealed, and a new trade policy developed.
  20. The word has to get out to corporate America, they are going to have to start reinvesting in the United States of America. They are going to have to start building the products and the goods the American people need rather …read more

The Prison Of Peoples – France’s Le Pen Calls For European ‘Spring’

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Via VoxDay blog,

Marine Le Pen writes a powerful argument for nationalism and the end of the EU in the New York Times:

The European Union has become a prison of peoples. Each of the 28 countries that constitute it has slowly lost its democratic prerogatives to commissions and councils with no popular mandate. Every nation in the union has had to apply laws it did not want for itself. Member nations no longer determine their own budgets. They are called upon to open their borders against their will.

Countries in the eurozone face an even less enviable situation. In the name of ideology, different economies are forced to adopt the same currency, even if doing so bleeds them dry. It’s a modern version of the Procrustean bed, and the people no longer have a say.

And what about the European Parliament? It’s democratic in appearance only, because it’s based on a lie: the pretense that there is a homogeneous European people, and that a Polish member of the European Parliament has the legitimacy to make law for the Spanish. We have tried to deny the existence of sovereign nations. It’s only natural that they would not allow being denied.

Brexit wasn’t the European people’s first cry of revolt. In 2005, France and the Netherlands held referendums about the proposed European Union constitution. In both countries, opposition was massive, and other governments decided on the spot to halt the experiment for fear the contagion might spread. A few years later, the European Union constitution was forced on the people of Europe anyway, under the guise of the Lisbon Treaty. In 2008, Ireland, also by way of referendum, refused to apply that treaty. And once again, a popular decision was brushed aside.

When in 2015 Greece decided by referendum to reject Brussels’ austerity plans, the European Union’s antidemocratic response took no one by surprise: To deny the people’s will had become a habit. In a flash of honesty, the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, unabashedly declared, “There can be no democratic choice against the European treaties.”

Brexit may not have been the first cry of hope, but it may be the people’s first real victory.

With eloquent nationalist leaders like her, Viktor Orban, and Matteo Salvini, among others there is reason to believe it will not be the last one. The EU is immoral, unnatural, anti-democratic, and evil. The sooner it collapses, the better off everyone will be.

The globalists are the Nazis of the 30s and 40s and the Communists of the Cold War. They are the enemy of Man. As Le Pen aptly notes, “more and more, the destiny of the European Union resembles the destiny of the Soviet Union, which died from its own contradictions.”

One thing is certain: Britain’s departure from the European Union will not make the union more democratic. The hierarchical structure of its supranational institutions will want to reinforce itself: Like all dying ideologies, the union knows only how to forge blindly ahead. The roles …read more

Pening Home Sales Crash Most In 6 Years – ‘Supply’ Blamed

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Following April’s exuberant 6 year high bounce (revised lower from +5.1% to +3.9%), May saw pending home sales plunge 3.7% – the biggest drop since May 2010. Sales declined in all 4 regions (with a 4.2% plunge in Midwest to January lows). This is the first annual drop in home sales in 2 years (-0.2%) and realtors are blaming ‘supply’ on the slump… sure (and all that pent up demand).

Remember April…

Well May gave it all back…

And was revised drastically lower…

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, says pending sales slumped in May across most of the country.

“With demand holding firm this spring and homes selling even faster than a year ago, the notable increase in closings in recent months took a dent out of what was available for sale in May and ultimately dragged down contract activity,” he said.

“Realtors® are acknowledging with increasing frequency lately that buyers continue to be frustrated by the tense competition and lack of affordable homes for sale in their market.”

Despite mortgage rates hovering around three-year lows for most of the year, Yun says scant supply and swiftly rising home prices – which surpassed their all-time high last month – are creating an availability and affordability crunch that’s preventing what should be a more robust pace of sales.

“Total housing inventory at the end of each month has remarkably decreased year-over-year now for an entire year,” adds Yun.

“There are simply not enough homes coming onto the market to catch up with demand and to keep prices more in line with inflation and wage growth.”
