Japan: A Future Of Stagnation

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by Charles Hugh-Smith of OfTwoMinds blog,

Take a declining population with declining rates of productivity growth and load it up with debt, and you get a triple-whammy recipe for permanent stagnation.

One of our longtime friends in Japan just sold the family business. The writing was on the wall, and had been for the past decade: fewer customers, with less money, and no end of competition for the shrinking pool of customers and spending.

Our friend is planning to move to another more vibrant economy in Asia. She didn't want to spend the rest of her life struggling to keep the business afloat. She wanted to have a family and a business with a future. It was the right decision, not only for her but for her family: get out while there's still some value in the business to sell.

I have written a number of entries on Japan's economic downward-spiral and its largely hidden social depression over the past decade, most recently: Global Bellwether: Japan's Social Depression (September 25, 2014)

Lessons from Japan: Decades of Decay, Unavoidable Collapse (April 26, 2016)

The Keynesian Fantasy is that encouraging people to borrow money to replace what they no longer earn is a policy designed to fail, and fail it has. Borrowing money incurs interest payments, which even at low rates of interest eventually crimps disposable earnings.

Banks must loan this money at a profit, so interest rates paid by borrowers can't fall to zero. If they do, banks can't earn enough to pay their operating costs, and they will close their doors.

If banks reach for higher income, that requires loaning money to poor credit risks and placing risky bets in financial markets. Once you load them up with enough debt, even businesses and wage earners who were initially good credit risks become poor credit risks.

Uncreditworthy borrowers default, costing the banks not just whatever was earned on the risky loans but the banks' capital.

The banking system is designed to fail, and fail it does. Japan has played the pretend-and-extend game for decades by extending defaulting borrowers enough new debt to make minimal interest payments, so the non-performing loan can be listed in the “performing” category.

Central banks play the game by lowering interest rates so debtors can borrow more. This works like monetary cocaine for a while, boosting spending and giving the economy a false glow of health, but then the interest payments start sapping earnings, and once the borrowed money has been spent/squandered, what's left is the interest payments stretching into the future.

Central banks played another game: buying assets to inflate asset bubbles, bubbles that were supposed to spark the wealth effect: once businesses and households see their net worth rise as assets bubble higher, they will be psychologically induced to borrow against that new wealth and spend, spend, spend.

The Bank of Japan has played this game to little effect. The BOJ now owns a significant chunk of Japan's stock market, but the real economy continues its long descent into …read more

Orlando Killer’s Father "Knew Obama"? Schmoozed In Washington, Sought Afghan Presidency

Seddique-Mateen and Dana Rohrbacher

Submitted by Mac Slavo via SHTFPlan.com,

How close was presumed killer Omar Mateen to the bizarre world of Washington politics?

Close enough to raise your hackles about what is really going on.

Mateen’s father, Seddique Mateen, apparently visits the Capitol frequently, take pictures in front of the State Department and White House press room, and likes to pose with Congressmen, especially from the Foreign Affairs Committee.

There are also rumors, though they are unconfirmed, that Seddique Mateen has also met with President Obama.

His activity at the State Department and Foreign Affairs Committee also suggest possible liaisons with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and current Secretary of State John Kerry, along with other U.S. politicians.

Picture of him were posted to his Facebook account:

Screen shot 2016-06-17 at 6.27.25 AM

Screen shot 2016-06-17 at 6.31.02 AM

Seddique is currently running for president in Afghanistan, and has been lobbying for State Department backing in what would be a tense balance between support for the Taliban and U.S. alike. He also broadcasts a TV show in California that feature his political views and campaign material.

It is father Seddique who planted the story in the media that Mateen was driven to kill after becoming upset at seeing two men kissing in Miami – framing the issue in terms of hate crimes and politically-loaded groups in conflict:

“We were in Downtown Miami, Bayside, people were playing music, and he saw two men kissing each other in front of his wife and kid and he got very angry. They were kissing each other and touching each other and he said, ‘Look at that. In front of my son they are doing that.’ And they we were in the men’s bathroom and men were kissing each other.”

Given that his son was a long-time security contractor at G4S in conjunction with Homeland Security and FEMA government contracts before he apparently pledged loyalty to ISIS and shot up a gay nightclub, there are many questions about the penetration of security inside the U.S. by radical Islamic, foreign and/or ISIS elements.

Patrick Henningsen at 21st Century Wire identified him as a CIA asset in Afghanistan:

FACT: The father of this shooter is very well-connected. Too well-connected for this event’s narrative to considered ‘normal.’

[Seddique Mateen is] an absolutely ideal profile for a Washington-managed, CIA controlled-opposition political candidate….

Screen shot 2016-06-17 at 6.25.51 AM

He also cites Daniel Hopsicker’s interesting addition – that the members of Congress that Mateen has been meeting with are also connected to intelligence activities involving Afghanistan… and so is the media channel:

My own suspicion was first awakened on Monday morning when U.S. news outlets uniformly reported that the father’s TV show aired on a U.S.-based Afghan satellite channel.

The name of the nameless Afghan satellite channel, Payam Afghan, is said to be widely-known in Southwest Asia as a CIA-Pakistani ISI construct, as this picture from Flicker shows.

New York State Senator Introduces Unconstitutional, Anti-Free-Speech Legislation

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Perhaps the greatest irony of this past year has been the mind numbing and irrational anti-free speech wave that swept across facets of so-called “liberal” America.

This regressive movement was most readily apparent on college campuses, where hordes of sheltered and emotionally stunted students demanded restrictions on free speech in order to prevent themselves from being offended by an ever expanding list of unhappy thoughts and words. However, what is far more troubling, albeit much less public, are attempts by two fascist academic authoritarians, to convince the American citizenry to relinquish their First Amendment rights in the name of fighting ISIS. One of these men is a close advisor to President Obama.

– From last year’s post: Glenn Greenwald Confronts American “Liberals” Trying to Destroy Free Speech

It seems everywhere you turn, U.S. politicians at all levels of government are incessantly scheming to figure out ways to further erode the civil liberties of the American public. Earlier this month, a particularly egregious example emerged from the state of New York. It relates to an anti-First Amendment executive order issued by Governor Andrew Cuomo, followed one day later by similar legislation introduced by a state Senator. In case you aren’t up to speed on the issue, here’s a little background.

From The Huffington Post:

Over the past year, several attempts in the New York legislature to pass laws protecting Israel against the boycotts, divestment and sanctions collectively known as “BDS” have failed. BDS punishes Israel for its illegal occupation of Palestinian lands. In an unprecedented end run around the legislative process, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an executive order this month that would accomplish just what the legislature has refused to do.

Cuomo’s order directs all agencies under his jurisdiction to discontinue all dealings with companies and organizations that support BDS. It also mandates that Cuomo’s commissioner compile a list of institutions and companies that support a boycott of Israel. The blacklist will be publicly posted. The burden of proving that these entities do not support the boycott is on the companies and institutions themselves.

In 2014, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu excoriated BDS during his address to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, the powerful United States-based organization that lobbies for Israel. Cuomo now walks in lockstep with Netanyahu. In his executive order, Cuomo declared, “If you boycott against Israel, New York will boycott you.”

An Unconstitutional Executive Order

Cuomo’s order is also unconstitutional. “The Supreme Court has made clear [that the] government can’t penalize people or entities on the basis of their free expression, and political boycotts are a form of free expression,” the New York Civil Liberties Union declared. “Creating a government blacklist that imposes state sanctions based on political belief raises serious First Amendment concerns.”

“Gov. Cuomo has decided that his moral compass points in the direction of Joseph McCarthy rather than Rosa Parks,” said Columbia Law School professor Katherine Franke, who chairs the …read more

First Brexit Poll After Jo Cox Death Reveals Stunning Result

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

The sad death of pro-EU British MP Jo Cox prompted a buying spree in Sterling that carried on through today as hope sprung eternal that her assassination (and the efforts to politicize the actions of a mad man) would lead to either a delayed vote or sympathetic pro-EU “Remain” swing. JPMorgan hinted before the close that was not the case and now, as USA Today reports, the first post-Cox poll reveals a shocking swing in “Remain” voters

British support for remaining in the European Union has weakened in the wake of the murder of the pro-EU politician Jo Cox, according to an online research company Friday.

Qriously, a London-based technology start-up that gathers data and intelligence about consumers through mobile phone apps, found that backing among likely voters for Britain's EU membership has dropped to 32% from 40% before her death.

The poll was based on 1,992 British adults surveyed on June 13-16, and then 1,002 on June 17 — the day after Cox was shot and killed in northern England. The start-up claims to have held the first such survey on the topic since the lawmaker's slaying. Most of Qriously’s surveys are done for corporate brands and it has not been previously conducted an EU referendum poll.

Respondents were asked: “Imagine the EU referendum were held today. Would you vote for the U.K. to remain a member of the European Union, or leave the European Union?” They were given three options: “Remain in the EU,” “Leave the EU,” or “Don't know.”

While liquidty is extremely thin, Cable has slid a little on the news in late trading…

With news that The Times newspaper has come out in support of the “Remain” campaign (while The Sun, The Spectator, and The Telegraph all support “Leave”), the fact that Qriously found that 52% will vote to leave the bloc in a national referendum on June 23 (unchanged from before the parliamentarian's death) is telling to the social divide in Britain, but the weakening support for remaining in the EU coincided with a large move toward “Don't know,” which leaped to 16% from 9% before Cox's assassination.

The major British polling firms, including YouGov, were expected to release their first EU opinion surveys following Cox's murder over the weekend.

Stocks Slump Most In 4 Months As Global Financial Stress Nears 5-Year Highs

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

With everyone worried about Brexit, we thought the folowing might help clarify (Please Note – Very Not Suitable For Work)…

ok it didn't help at all but we've been wanting an excuse to play that for a while.

Global Financial Stress Index spikes up most since Aug 2011…

As Brexit polls surge towards “Leave”…

As USDollar Scarcity (panic demand) rears its ugly head again…

And GDP-weighted European Sovereign risk surged to 2 year highs…

But here's what sadly really mattered in this week's insane market…

A Volatile week..

  • S&P down 1.3% this week – worst week in 4 months
  • DAX down 6.4% in last 3 weeks – worst drop in 4 months
  • EU Financials up 5% today – best in 2 months (down 13% in 3 weeks, worst run since April 2012)
  • TSY 2s30s +2bps – first steepening in 8 weeks
  • 10Y Bund yields down 4 weeks in a row to record lows (-3.8bps)
  • WTI Crude down 3%, worst week in 2 months
  • Gold up 6.6% in last 3 weeks – most in 4 months
  • Cable up 350 pips from yesterday's lows – biggest swing in 3 months
  • JPY up 5.5% in last 3 weeks – 2nd biggest rise since June 2013

Since The Fed capitulated, Gold leads, bonds are just green and stocks are red…

And Nasdaq has been the biggest loser post-Fed…

On the week, Nasdaq (Apple and Google) was worst along with Trannies…

The S&P 500 cash index is glue to its 50-day moving average…

While most EU stocks bounced today, the week was ugly, led by collapse in financials…

US Financials continue to slide…

It was Quad witch so VIX shenanigans were always likely…

Treasury yields ended the week down 3-6bps (belly outperforming, long-end wost) after bonds sold off hard post-Jo-Cox…

The Yield curve was quite chaotic this week…

The US Dollar Index fell for the 3rd day in a row as Cable rallied… but look at USDJPY's death of volatility today…

Elsewhere in alternative currencies, Bitcoin surged and gold and the USD recoupled perfectly today (though note the extremely unsusual behavior yesterday)…

Commodity markets were chaotic this week…

Gold spiked back above $1300 into the close…

Morgan Stanley Expects Unprecedented Market Moves No Matter How Brexit Vote Goes

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

While by now practically every bank has forecast how the market would react to a Brexit vote, either to say or leave, nobody has quite come as close to dramatic forecast revealed by Morgan Stanley analysts overnight. The bank, which after the sharp move in the polls to Leave has now raised the probability of a vote to Leave to 45%, predicts that MSCI Europe would see a 15-20% drop in a base case BREXIT scenario. This compares to a 5-10% rally if the UK votes to remain in the EU.

Here are the two cases as summarized for the Stoxx 50 and FTSE 100, based on whether Remain or Leave wins:

STOXX 50

  • Base case index target range under Leave is 2400-2550.
  • Rally up to 3150-3300 under Remain.

FTSE100

  • Base case index target range under Leave is 5000-5300.
  • Rally up to 6500-6800 under Remain

Below we present the full MS bull, base and bear case scenarios in the event of Brexit.

PE and EPS assumptions for MSCI Europe

Scenario framework for MSCI Europe in event of BREXIT

PE framework. MSCI Europe’s N12M PE is 14x today and has averaged 15x over the last 3M. This compares to our expectation of a 5-10% rally if the UK votes to remain in the EU. The median reading since 1987 is 12.9.

  • Base case: We assume a 15% drop in N12M PE which would imply a move down to 12.8 from its L3M average.
  • Bear case: A 20-25% drop in the N12M PE would imply a move down to c. 12x – still materially above the single-digit lows seen during 2011/12.

EPS framework. Historically, European earnings have generally declined by 30-40% during recessions, although their current depressed level suggests a similar outcome from here would be unlikely.

  • Base case: We assume a 5-10% drop in EPS reflecting a slowing of economic activity and downward pressure on Financials profits (that still account for 30% of the market). FX weakness would be likely to provide some modest support to EPS over time. This assumption is smaller than the 11% decline in EPS seen during 2011-2012.
  • Bear case: We assume 15-20% drop in EPS based on our economists’ forecast for deeper GDP slowdown under their ‘severe stress’ scenario

MSCI Europe

The base case view is of a vote for the UK to remain in the EU, and a resulting stock rally. In the tables below MS applies its expected price moves in bull, base and bear scenarios against the underlying index’s average price level over the last 3 months (note the numbers are virtually identical if compared versus L6M). Profiling Jo Cox’s Killer: Was He A "Terrorist" Or Just Insane

By Tyler Durden

In the aftermath of the tragic murder of British Labour MP Jo Cox, the most poignant – and debated – question that has emerged is whether the shooter, 52-year-old white male Thomas Mair, was motivated by political ideology especially since as some eyewitness have claimed he shouted “Britain First” during his deadly attack and is now being probed for “far-right links”, or if he was simply mentally ill.

The reason is simple: just like in the aftermath of the mass Orlando shooting, both Brexit camps are trying to score political points by presenting the lone shooter as indicative of the ideology they are trying to protect the UK from.

As we reported earlier, none other than Angela Merkel promptly tried to portray the event as an example of “radicalization”, suggesting that the murder was ideologically provoked: She said that the “total exaggeration and radicalization of the debate doesn’t contribute to facilitating such respect. So for all of us who value democratic rules, we know how important it is to establish boundaries in one’s choice of language and argument as well as the choice in a sometimes disparaging way of arguing — and to engage with respect those who think and believe and love differently… Otherwise it will be difficult to stop radicalization.”

And while the question of radicalization is certainly relevant, is it fair or event ethical, to bring it up in the aftermath of Cox’ murder if the shooter had no rational, ideological motive and was simply insane? The answer will likely never be revealed as every side will use whatever narrative suits it, we do know some facts.

As the Guardian reported overnight, the picture that emerged of the man known as Tom or Tommy from those who knew him best was of a quiet and caring loner. His half brother, who is mixed race, claimed he had been volunteering at a school for children with disabilities for several years and had never expressed any racist views. Duane St Louis, 41, described his brother as a devoted son who shopped for their mother twice a week and who had visited her on Wednesday night to help tune her TV.

St Louis insisted his brother had never expressed any racist views and seemed fine to have a mixed-race sibling. Asked whether he had any strong political views, St Louis said: “Not that I know of.” He said he had no idea how Mair had got hold of a gun and did not have any hobbies that would require a firearms licence.

Mair grew up not with his mother, Mary, but his maternal grandmother, Helen, who died in 1996. The pair lived in a semi-detached house on the Fieldhead estate in Birstall, 15 minutes walk up the hill from where Cox was killed. St Louis said his brother lived alone after their grandmother’s death and had never married or had children. He had not had a girlfriend for years. “He had one girlfriend when he was younger but his mate took her off …read more

Saudi Foreign Minister Urges Release Of Classified Sept 11 Pages, "Supports More Aggressive Approach To Syria"

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Earlier today, when breaking down the “mutiny” at the State Department which as the WSJ reported saw over 50 staffers demand that military strikes be launched against Syria to eliminated president Assad “as the only way to defeat the Islamic State”, we suggested that one of the untold motives behind this surprising revolt, a very disturbing one, is that this was merely a trojan horse proposal to push the Saudi agenda.

As we hinted, the US may be merely pandering to Saudi demands, something it has clearly done very well ever since the Sep 11 attacks which covered up Saudi involvement:

The cable also echoes the growing impatience among U.S. Gulf allies with the lack of military intervention targeted at the Damascus government to force Mr. Assad to resign and make way for a transitional government. Peace talks between Syria’s government and opposition collapsed in April over Mr. Assad’s fate, with the regime insisting he should stay in power, while the negotiated cease-fire continued to disintegrate. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have pressed the U.S. to provide more sophisticated weapons to rebels. But Washington has resisted.

In other words, if the US does fold and proceeds with military strikes, i.e. full blown invasion and war, on Assad, it will once again be Saudi Arabia that is running US foreign policy, and pushing the US nation into what may be a state of open war with Russia.

As we concluded “we can only hope the American people wake up and stop this travesty
before Saudi Arabia’s favorite presidential candidate is elected
president.”

Then moments ago, the Saudi foreign minister Adel al Jubeir who is visiting the US and just concluded a meeting with President Obama confirmed just that when he said that “Saudi Arabia supports a more aggressive military approach in Syria to get Assad to agree to a political solution.”

The Foreign Minister says Saudi Arabia supports a more aggressive military approach in Syria to get Assad to agree to a political solution.

— Mark Knoller (@markknoller) June 17, 2016

In other words, he is urging Obama, or rather not the lame duck president, but rather his replacement, to fight a way for Saudi Arabia, one which may result in another far more serious war, that with Russia.

Which, of course, explains our article from early this week, namely the stunning admission by the Saudi Crown Prince that “Saudi Arabia Has Funded 20% Of Hillary’s Presidential Campaign.” We can already guess what one of president Hillary’s first foreign policy decisions will be: sending even more US troops to fight an offensive Saudi war against the sovereign state of Syria.

And then, in another curious admission, Jubeir also backtracked on his warning from mid-April in which he said that pursuing legal action against the Saudis over Sept 11 would lead to the Kingdom’s dumping of hundreds of billions in US reserves, and instead is now encouraging the release of the classified 28 pages on the September 11 attacks.

Is Islamic Terror America’s Future?

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by Patrick Buchanan via Buchanan.org,

If the cliches hold – nothing succeeds like success, the past is prologue – this generation will not likely see an end to the jihadist terror that was on display at Pulse in Orlando on Sunday.

For terrorism has proven to be among the most cost-effective and successful strategies of war that the world has ever seen.

Consider. The 9/11 attacks involved 19 hijackers willing to crash airliners into four buildings: the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and the Capitol.

So doing, those 19 altered the foreign policy of the United States.

They drew the world’s last superpower into wars that have bled and almost bankrupted us, broken a president, and left us mired in half a dozen civil and sectarian conflicts with no exit or end in sight.

As a political terrorist, Osama bin Laden rivals Gavrilo Princip, whose assassination of the Austrian archduke set in train the events that led to the Great War that brought on the downfall of the West.

Consider the success of Islamist terror since 9/11.

As Gerry Seib of The Wall Street Journal notes, in the 15 years since then, just 95 Americans have died in jihadist attacks in the U.S.

Yet, one atrocity in Orlando, where 49 were slaughtered, polarized the nation, brought the presidential candidates to savaging one another, and held a national TV audience spellbound for a week.

The whole world is talking about Orlando.

And what did this victory cost the Islamic State?

Zero. What Omar Mateen did suicide bombers do every day in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, kill dozens of innocent people while shouting “Allahu Akbar!”

Yet compare the returns from this act of Islamist terror in Orlando, to those from similar attacks in Kabul, Baghdad or Damascus.

Any wonder ISIS would implore its followers to strike where they are, inside the U.S., inside Europe, and not come to Syria to die anonymously?

Under siege in Raqqa, Mosul and Fallujah, being bombed and bled as it surrenders the conquered lands of its caliphate, ISIS’ shift in strategy and targeting makes perfect sense.

Consider, now, the triumphs of Islamist terrorism in Europe.

The 2004 Madrid train bombings led to the defeat of a centrist government and rise of a socialist regime that pulled Spanish troops out of Iraq.

The Paris attacks on Charlie Hebdo and the Bataclan theater strengthened the National Front of Marine Le Pen.

The Beslan massacre of school children in North Ossetia in 2004 led to a consolidation of power by Russian strongman Vladimir Putin.

Across Europe, the political impact of Islamist terrorism, though the numbers of dead and wounded have been, measured against the casualties of conventional war, relatively few, has been extraordinary.

Islamist terrorism has helped spawn anti-immigrant parties and “illiberal” regimes. The association of Islamic terror with Muslim immigration and refugees from Syria’s war has helped to drive “Brexit,” the British campaign to secede from the EU.

Islamist attacks have helped propel anti-EU movements and to incite nationalist demands for a recapture of state control of borders and security policy from Brussels.

Obama explains his reluctance to use …read more
