How Central Banks Created "Trumpism"

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by Brendan Brown via The Mises Institute,

In our time, the greatest source of money chaos is now the global 2%-inflation standard. Deflation-phobic central bankers, led by the FOMC at the Fed, are defying the natural rhythm of prices in a capitalist economy. Under sound money, there would be periods of both falling and rising prices.

Since central bankers choose to steadfastly ignore this reality, the result has been the emergence of three serious global asset price inflation diseases in just three decades. Their undermining of economic prosperity has shown up as a situation marked by low investment, malinvestment, and correspondingly weak real income and productivity growth. This has been coupled with episodes of huge profits for “Wall Street,” and the resulting increased inequality has made fertile ground for populism both on the left and the right. Meanwhile, the intensified regulatory state, which populism has helped produce, has compounded the economic malaise.

The Role of “Official” Productivity and Inflation

A principal tenet relied upon by the architects and advocates of the global 2% inflation standard has been that productivity growth is greater than is reported, while inflation is less than reported — according to the official statistics. And so, 2% inflation on the official measure might be only 0-0.5% in reality.

Meanwhile, the central bankers claim, statisticians are not correctly measuring the improvements in our daily lives that new technology brings. Price measurements, we’re told, don’t tell us enough about how much value is added by innovative products, such as time saved, or safety gained. The effort to include these improvements within the price measures is known as hedonic price accounting. Hedonics is designed to measure the fact that automobiles technology, for example, makes cars safer and more comfortable than you think. Yes, cars are much more expensive today — the argument goes — but we have to factor increases in quality and efficiency into modern prices. If you take this into account, the central bankers claim, then inflation is actually lower than you think, because the products we buy are all of higher quality now, and we’re getting more for our money.

Thus, if a piece of medical software does more today than 20 years ago, then inflation in the price of that good is actually less than the statistics suggest.

This Is Nothing New

The same point concerning price statistics could have been raised in the gold standard years of say 1870–1914, or in the 1920s, or the 1950s and 60s.

During those periods, incidentally, there was no hedonic price accounting then at all — so stable prices as measured by the available statistics would have been equivalent to say 1–2% “deflation” under today’s measurement techniques.

The transition from canals to railroad transportation — or from ice cupboards and salting to refrigeration — evidently had benefits which transcended crude price gathering by statistical offices.

Technological Innovation Has Both Costs and Benefits

Broader economic reflection suggests that the statisticians in the pre-hedonic price adjustment age — which began in the 1980s and was …read more

The Beveridge Confusion: Hiring Tumbles Despite Job Openings Rising To Record High

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

After last Friday’s disastrous jobs report and concurrent prior revisions, few were expecting any remarkable developments from “Yellen’s favorite labor market indicator”, the BLS’ JOLTS, or Jobs Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, and yet there were two surprises.

First, when it comes to actual job openings, the number rose from a downward revised 5.675MM to 5.788MM, which meant the job opening rate remained flat at 3.9%, even if the actual number of job opening just matched the all time high of last July.

The biggest number of job openings were in the leisure and hospitality services industry, followed by accommodation and food services; retail trade; and education and health services, all the lowest or minimum wage paying jobs.

And while job openings continued rise, actual hiring slowed down substantially: at 5.092MM new hires in the month of April, this was the lowest since September of 2015. As the chart below, which correlates the 12 month change in NFPs to hires, the labor market may indeed be rolling over.

Netting out separations from hires, showed that net turnover of jobs – traditionally the equivalent series to the BLS’ monthly establishment payrolls data – printed at only 104K, this was the lowest addition since June 2014. We expect next month’s data to be even worse as it declines to match the 38K reported in May job gains.

Finally, all of this is summarized in the latest Beveridge curve below, which shows that something remains structurally broken with the work force as at this level of unemployment, the jobs opening rate should be at least one whole percentage point lower, suggesting wage pressures are building up. It is this slack that is resulting in so much confusion at the Fed, not to mention lack of wage growth.

This is how the BLS explains the above chart:

  • The graph plots the job openings rate against the unemployment rate. This graphical representation is known as
the Beveridge Curve, named after the British economist William Henry Beveridge (1879-1963). The economy’s
position on the downward sloping Beveridge Curve reflects the state of the business cycle.
  • During an expansion, the unemployment rate is low and the job openings rate is high. Conversely, during a contraction, the unemployment rate is high and the job openings rate is low. The position of the curve is determined by the efficiency of the labor market. For example, a greater mismatch between available jobs and the unemployed in terms of skills or location would cause the curve to shift outward (up and toward the right).
  • From the start of the most recent recession in December 2007 through the end of 2009, the series trended lower and further to the right as the job openings rate declined and the unemployment rate rose. From 2010 to the present, the series has been trending up and to the left as the job openings rate increased and the unemployment rate decreased.
  • In April 2016, the unemployment rate was 5.0 percent and the job openings …read more

These Are The Bonds The ECB Is Now Buying

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Today is a historic day for the corporate bond market: with the launch of the ECB’s CSPP, Mario Draghi is now directly buying European investment grade non-financial bonds. This means that no longer will European corporate bonds trade based on their fundamentals, but purely on expectations of frontrunning future ECB purchases. And to make the frontrunners’ lives easier, according to Bloomberg among the ECB’s purchases today were €3 million Engie bonds, Telecom Italia notes due in 2023 and 10-year Telefonica securities; the ECB also bought securities issued by Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, the world’s largest brewer; Telefonica SA, Spain’s former telecommunications monopoly; Siemens AG, Europe’s biggest engineering company; Assicurazioni Generali SpA, Italy’s top insurer; French automaker Renault SA and utilities Engie SA and RWE AG.

We expect their yields to tumble to even lower record lows in the coming days. Engie’s 300 million euros of notes maturing in 2111 rose as much 2.8 cents on the euro to the highest since April at 170 cents after it was reported that the French central bank bought the company’s bonds on behalf of the ECB.

RWE’s 600 million euros of notes due February 2033 rose 0.6 cents on the euro to 135.4 cents, the highest in four weeks, while Telefonica’s 1.35 billion euros of 10-year bonds rose to the highest on record, Bloomberg data show.

The ECB is targeting bonds with maturities of five years to eight years from chemical and real estate companies; six years to eight years for utilities; and two years to three years for auto firms. The ECB can choose from as many as 1,049 securities totaling 620 billion euros, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. CreditSights puts the size of the universe at about 628 billion euros, while Morgan Stanley estimates it is about 675 billion euros. The ECB will publish a list of its corporate bond holdings on July 18 and update it every Monday, according to the central bank.

As Regina Borromeo of Brandywine Global Investment Management said, “Draghi knows the ECB needed to come out with a big punch on the first day of its corporate purchase program to maintain credibility and confidence in his willingness to act.” And so he has: average yields for euro notes were down to 0.98% on Tuesday, the lowest in more than a year, according to Bank of America Merrill Lynch index data. The ECB’s intervention in the government bond market over the past year has pushed yields down to records, as pricing no longer reflects any fundamentals.

While the ECB having preannounced it would purchase these and other securities some three months ago, investors are watching for an indication of whether they were right to pile into investment-grade corporate bonds on the promise of ECB President Mario Draghi’s purchases.

Much is riding on the line for Draghi as a result of this unprecedented attempt to spur European inflation by way of encouraging stock buybacks, which is what the “logic”“There is a fair amount riding on this in terms of the ECB’s credibility,” …read more

Dennis Gartman Mocks Bill Ackman’s "Demise"; Tries To Understand Bitcoin, Fails

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

In an unexpected development, in his latest note the best market inflection point indicator alive, Dennis Gartman, has decided to pick on none other than billionaire Bill Ackman. This is the result:

We wish to talk once again about the incredible collapse of Valeant’s shares and the damage being wrought upon the reputation of those hedge fund managers still caught long of this company’s shares, with the leading example remaining the demise of the once sterling reputation of Mr. Bill Ackman of Pershing Square Capital. Here we have one of the true giants of the hedge fund industry; a gentleman once worth billions who ran billions more; a leader in the performance race for many years and now rather obviously a gentleman, who like Icarus of Greek mythology fame, flew too close to the sun and is now falling into oblivion.

Pershing Square’s assets are down 18.6% for the year as of the end of May we are told. We see no sense in being vindictive for there is nothing to be gained in being so; rather we wish simply to point out that the “Rules of Trade” are meant to be adhered to and that the “first among equal” of our rules of trading is the first: that one is never, ever, under any circumstance to average down into a trade. As our old friend, Paul Tudor Jones, says in this regard, “Losers average losers.”

When one averages down into a long position… or averages “up” into a short position… only one thing can be happening to the equity in one’s account: it must, by definition, be falling. If you buy a company’s stock at $25/share and it goes to $20/share, you are worth less than you were before. It cannot be otherwise. It is simple arithmetic. On the other hand, if you buy a company’s shares at $25/share and they go to $30/share your equity can only be larger. Why, we ask, would you wish for the former?

When a stock begins to fall there is no actual way of telling how far down it may fall before its weakness is stemmed. Enron’s shares fell relentlessly… inexorably… from $85/share to zero, and it was considered to be under-valued at every single penny lower as it fell. Buyers bought all the way down into bankruptcy. We watched as USAirways’ stock fell from $125/share all the way to zero, with some of the great minds in the business having owned it… and having bought it… all the way down into oblivion. We watched as sugar prices in the early 70’s fell from $1.25/lb. to $0.03/lb., with buyers all the way down, and over the past three decades we’ve watched as the coupon on the long bond here in the US has gone from 14.25% to where it is today in single digits.

The purpose for this exercise is to learn the lesson that Mr. Ackman is learning the very hardest of ways: that the market is wiser and larger and …read more

Clinton Projected Winner Of California Primary, Sanders Vows To Fight On

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

With Hillary already having proclaimed herself as the democratic nominee last night, NBC News just projected Hillary Clinton the winner of the California primary.

BREAKING: Hillary Clinton is the projected winner in California Dem primary https://t.co/d6eXWoZsRm #Decision2016 pic.twitter.com/P20kziZ0Tm

— NBC News (@NBCNews) June 8, 2016

* * *

With 91.7% reporting, Hillary Clinton was leading by a margin of 56% to 43% when Clinton was declared the winner.

More from The Hill

Clinton picks up 67 delegates so far while Sanders will gain one delegate, the wire service projected.

The polls closed at 8 p.m. Pacific Time Tuesday night, but the state is known for a relatively slow count of ballots thanks in part to its massive size.

The Golden State is the largest delegate prize in the entire race — the winner will receive the majority of the state’s 475 delegates.

But the final result will have little effect on the contours of the race. Hillary Clinton came into Tuesday with enough delegates, thanks to party superdelegates, to secure the Democratic nomination, and the AP declared her the de facto nominee on Monday night.

She will finish Tuesday’s primaries with the majority of pledged delegates, those awarded through primary results, according to NBC News.

Polls leading up to the California primary showed a tight race. Clinton held a slight lead, but the two candidates sat within the margin of error in most recent polls. The win gives Clinton a strong victory that will serve as icing on the cake after a historic night for her campaign.

“Thanks to you, we have reached a milestone. We all owe so much to who came before” Clinton said thanking supporters. Hillary will now try to win over loyal Sanders’ supporters by unifying the party against Donald Trump.

The stakes in this election are high and the choice is clear. Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit to be president and commander-in-chief. When Donald Trump says a distinguished judge born in Indiana can’t do his job because of his Mexican heritage, or he mocks a reporter with disabilities, or calls women pigs, it goes against everything we stand for” Clinton said.

For the Sanders camp, there are few options left, and it remains to be seen what happens after Sanders meets with president Obama on Thursday. Although pressure will be mounting for Sanders to exit the race so the Democrats can focus solely on Trump, Bernie Sanders – for now – has vowed that the race will go on.

Next Tuesday, we continue the fight in the last primary in Washington, DC” Sanders said to supporters last night in Santa Monica, California. “And then we take our fight for social, economic, racial, and environmental justice to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania” Sanders added.

Thank you all, the struggle continues” Is how Bernie closed to a roaring crowd before leaving the stage.

Hillary Clinton Talks About Inequality In Jacket That Cost More Than A New Car

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by S.M.Gibson via TheAnriMedia.org,

As a political mainstay for over two decades, Hillary Clinton has gone out of her way for years to give off the impression she is a woman of the people. In 2014, she even tried to convince the voting public the Clintons were dead brokeafter leaving the White House.

As someone who wants to give the appearance of knowing the hardships of common people, Hillary loves to bring up the topic of income inequality. In April, while giving a victory speech for her win in the New York primary, Hillary brought up that very subject — and then attempted to boast about her support among average Americans.

“I know how important it is that we get the campaign’s resources from people just like you, who go in and chip in $5, $25. I am grateful to every one of you.

And she said every word of it while wearing a Giorgio Armani tweed jacket that cost a hefty $12,495.

At least lie to me Hillary — don’t pretend to be a champion against inequality while wearing an article of clothing that literally costs more than a new car. You lie about everything else, so rather than flouting your riches while championing the poor (and letting your riches show through the cracks), you might as well put on a cheap suit and give this ‘populist’ deception the effort you give your other ones. In fairness, Trump does wear Brioni suits, which cost upwards of $7,000 each — but he walks around like an orange Scrooge McDuck bragging about how rich he is.

Hillary pretends to be one of us. She isn’t. She’s just a hypocrite.

"They Do It For Better Grades" – Study Finds International Students 5 Times More Likely To Cheat

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

The number of international students attending US universities is rising, which is a welcome sight for administrators looking for ways to offset costs and stay profitable. What is not such a welcome sight however, is the amount of cheating that the international students are doing.

For the most recent academic year, 586,208 international undergraduate students attended US colleges and universities. More than 165,000 were from China, South Korea and Saudi Arabia contributed 50,000 and 23,500 respectively as well according to the WSJ.

What the WSJ found was that along with the influx for foreign students, the amount of cheating in the universities is being done by those students is significant as well. In an analysis of more than a dozen US public universities found that in the 2014-20105 school year, 5.1 out of every 100 international students were alleged to be cheating. The number compares to just 1.0 out of every 100 domestic students who cheat.

UC Davis reported as much as 11.8 student per 100 international students cheated, followed by the University of Arizona and Georgia Tech who reported 11.2 per 100 each.

Lanquing Wang, a Georgia Tech student from Shanghai said that “In China, It's OK to cheat as long as you're not caught.” Paidi Shi, vice president of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at the University of California, San Diego words it slightly differently, saying “In China, our culture puts a lot of pressure on students. We are more likely to find a shortcut to get a good grade.”

Qingwen Fan, has a theory that what drives the cheating is simply that in the US, the pressure subsides and kids want to enjoy life more.

“they want to enjoy life. They are busy with social stuff and everything they missed before. They start to cheat. They didn’t put in the time but they want to pass the test. That is kind of a cultural thing.”

Last year, Ohio State learned that a Chinese student had been advertising on a Chinese message board that he could guarantee an A on a test by taking it in someone's place. The price was $500 per test, and 30 students took the student up on the offer according to Kim Arcoleo, associate dean for transdisciplinary scholarship. “The cheating isn't limited to Chinese students, but we see a disproportionate amount coming from international students.” Arcoleo added.

The University of Iowa is investigating at least 30 students suspected of paying professional test takers to take online exams in their place the school says. Some of the suspected impersonators took the online tests in China.

“Cheating among Chinese students, especially those with poor language skills, is a huge problem.” Said Beth Mitchneck, a University of Arizona professor.

However some schools don't care for that angle, nor any excuse for academic dishonesty – A spokesman for Purdue University said the school stresses academic integrity at freshman orientation, and “we don't accept 'cultural confusion' as an excuse for dishonesty

Germany May Be A Bigger Threat To The European Union Than Brexit

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by John Mauldin via MauldinEconomics.com,

Two polls were recently released that call the European Union in question.

A poll in Italy reported that the Five Star Movement (a populist political party that wants to hold a referendum on whether Italy should remain in the European Union) was the most popular political party in the country ahead of local elections scheduled for next month.

On the same day, British researchers who surveyed nine EU countries reported that 45 percent of respondents believed that their country should hold a referendum on whether to remain in the EU.

48% of Italians want to leave the EU

Reuters tried to explain that political scandals, which have undermined public confidence in current Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s Democratic Party, affected the poll numbers. But this is Italy we’re talking about, the same country that brought us Silvio Berlusconi.

The country is no stranger to political scandals. A few instances of corruption would not be enough to make an anti-establishment party like the Five Star Movement as popular as it has apparently become.

The problem in Italy is economic. Unemployment in at least four of Italy’s southern provinces is over 18.8 percent, and in the other southern provinces, it is between 12 percent and 18.7 percent. And Italy hasn’t yet solved its non-performing loan problem.

Two simultaneous phenomena are occurring here. The first is disillusionment with the Italian government. What was an economic problem has become a political problem, and since Italy is a democracy, its leaders can be voted out of office. The next general election is not until 2018, but if developments continue to unfold in Italy, the situation is only going to get worse for mainstream political parties.

The second, deeper question is whether Italy wants to stay in the European Union. A Euroskeptic party is becoming the most popular political party in the eurozone’s third-largest economy. The rise of euroskepticism manifests itself in the polls, too—58 percent of Italians wanted a referendum on EU membership, and 48 percent would have voted to leave the EU.

In France, one of the twin pillars of the EU, 55 percent of survey respondents agreed a referendum should be called, and 41 percent said they would vote to leave.

Brexit debate adds fuel to the fire

Most debates over Brexit have revolved around potential consequences for Britain—whether Scotland might push for another independence referendum and join the EU on its own terms, or whether and how much (in terms of money and jobs) the UK would lose as a result of a decision to exit.

What was less addressed, however, is how Britain’s stand against the EU and the public debate is dividing the rest of Europe. Prime Minister David Cameron negotiated a series of exceptions early this year. Even if the UK remains, it will have a new set of understandings with Brussels, and other countries may follow its lead.

If Britain leaves and doesn’t undergo an apocalyptic depression, poll numbers might begin to trend upward—and they don’t have a long way …read more
