Gunman Attempts To Murder Prominent Turkish Journalist Outside Court In Broad Daylight

By Tyler Durden

Turkey’s conversion into an all out despotic, banana republic is almost complete.

Recall that in November, violence erupted in the troubled nation in which president Erdogan is now actively seeking dictatorial powers after a prominent lawyer and foe of Erdogan, was assassinated on live TV. This occured just days before Erdogan arrests journalists who exposed Erdogan’s weapons smuggling to extremist Syrian rebels, among whom was Cumhuriyet editor in chief Can Dundar.

Moments ago Turkey’s NTV reported that a gunman fired three shots at the famous Cumhuriyet editor-in-chief Can Dundar who was waiting outside an Istanbul court where he’s being tried for espionage, in a high profile trial being pursued by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, NTV reports. According to the report the bullet misses Dundar and hits an NTV reporter in the leg, NTV says.

Reuters adds that the assailant attempted to shoot Turkish journalist Can Dündar outside a courthouse in Istanbul just before the court was due to announce the verdict in Dündar’s trial on accusations of revealing state secrets.

Earlier on Friday, Dündar said journalism was on trial as he gave his final defence in a case that has drawn international criticism of Turkey’s press freedom record.

Dündar, editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet newspaper, and Erdem Gül, its Ankara bureau chief, could face life in jail on espionage charges and attempting to topple the government for publishing footage that purported to show Turkey’s state intelligence agency ferrying weapons into Syria in 2014. Their lawyers said the prosecutor did not seek the espionage charge in his closing statement, but nonetheless called for Dündar to be jailed for 25 years for procuring and revealing state secrets and for Gül to be jailed for 10 years for publishing them.

“We are now on trial for our story: for acquiring and publishing state secrets,” Dündar told Reuters during a court recess. “This confirms journalism is on trial, making our defence easier and a conviction harder.”

Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, who joined the trial as a complainant, accused the men of undermining Turkey’s international reputation and vowed Dündar would “pay a heavy price”, raising opposition concerns the case was politicised.

It appears he also meant the ultimate price.

“This case isn’t based on law, it’s political,” said Mahmut Tanal, from the opposition Republican People’s party. “That’s evidenced by the president joining this case as a complainant … There is an attempt to pressure the court.”

Cumhuriyet’s revelations, published in May 2015, infuriated Erdo?an, who said that Dündar would “pay a heavy price” and personally filed a criminal complaint against the journalists for what he has portrayed as part of an attempt to undermine Turkey’s global standing.

The story was based on a 2014 video purporting to show Turkey’s state intelligence agency helping to transport weapons to Syria. Erdo?an has acknowledged that the lorries, which were stopped by Turkish paramilitary forces and police officers en rout to the Syrian border, belonged to the intelligence agency but said they were carrying aid to Turkmen rebels in Syria. Where The April Jobs Were

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

We already know that the quantity of the April jobs was disappointing, but what about the quality? Well, on one hand the BLS reported that based on the Household Survey, in April 253K full time jobs were lost so there’s that. But what did the Establishment Survey, which is the far more massaged one and thus the one that algos pay the most attention to, show?

As the chart at the bottom reveals, following the March job gains which were driven by low paying education/health and retail trade as well as the better paying construction worker jobs, in April retail trade saw a big drop (as we predicted would happen last month), construction work likewise exhausted its growth, while the old standbys of Education and Health and Leisure and Hospitality continued to increase, rising by 54K and 22K respectively. The biggest job growth category, however, was Professional and Business services (which typically includes part-time jobs although we break it out), which saw a 56K increase in April, the biggest move higher for this job group in years.

An interesting rebound was observed in manufacturing jobs, which after tumbling by almost 30K last month, saw a modest 4K increase in April.

On the other end, a surprising drop was seen in government workers, which declined by 11K, while the 8K drop in minin and logging workers was very much as expected as the shale drama continues.

"Medical Error" Is Third Leading Cause Of Death In America – Estimated At 250,000 Annually

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

This certainly isn’t a comforting statistic.

From Bloomberg:

After heart disease and cancer, medical errors kill more Americans than anything else, claiming a quarter of a million lives a year, according to a study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University.

If bungles and safety lapses in the hospital were accounted for as deaths from disease and injury are, they would be the third most common cause of death in the U.S., leading to more fatalities than respiratory disease, the report in the British Medical Journal argues.

The new estimate, published today, draws on four studies of deaths due to errors that have come out since the 1999 report. The authors extrapolate from those findings to reach their estimate of 251,000 annual deaths. Even that figure, they say, probably underestimates the actual toll, because it includes only deaths in hospitals, not in out-patient surgery centers, nursing homes, or other health care settings.

While that article’s worth mentioning on its own, it’s particularly interesting in the context of a piece published yesterday at Wired titled, Why an Autonomous Robot Won’t Replace Your Surgeon Anytime Soon.

Here are a few excerpts:

The Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot could sew more evenly and consistently than even an experienced surgeon, according the report published in Science Translational Medicine. “It is a really nice piece of work. They’ve managed to push the envelope” says Ken Goldberg, director of UC Berkeley’s Center for Automation and Learning for Medical Robotics, who was not involved with STAR.

But in this case, STAR was still dependent on a surgeon to make the initial incision, take out the bowel, and line up the pieces before it fired up its autonomous suturing algorithm. “When you drive a car you use cruise control. The same logic would apply for surgical technology,” says Peter Kim, a pediatric surgeon on the STAR team. Just as cars have gained more autonomous functions—parallel parking, lane changes—STAR has been programmed to do other things like cut and cauterize, and Kim says they’re planning to do an entire supervised surgery like removing the appendix. But unlike Google’s autonomous car, which doesn’t even have a steering wheel, nobody is talking about a surgery robot with no human supervision.

If the technology behind STAR is going to make it into the hospital any time soon, according to Kim, it’ll probably be integrated into an existing platform. That could mean, for example, adding automated tasks to something like da Vinci, where the doctor still has final control. It makes sense, because the real advance behind STAR is software, not hardware. The robotic arm is just an arm from the German company Kuka, which makes robotic arms of all sizes for industrial use. What makes STAR unique is its ability to “see” inside the 3-D folds of soft tissue by using a 3-D lightfield camera—similar in concept to Lytro’s camera—that looks for fluorescent biomarkers injected inside the tissue. “The key to this paper …read more

Large Truck Orders Continue To Plunge, Down 39% In April

Class 8 Truck Orders Plunge 39%; Large Truck Sales vs. Recessions

Class 8, “heavy duty” truck orders are down 39% from a year ago.

First, let’s take a look at the reports, then we will take a look at what this may mean for the economy.

Class 8 Truck Orders Plunge 39%

The Wall Street Journal reports Truck Orders Fall in April.

Last month, trucking fleets ordered just 13,500 Class 8 trucks, the big rigs used on long-haul routes, down 16% from March and 39% from a year earlier. It was the fewest net orders in any April since 2009, FTR said.

DAT Solutions, an Oregon-based transportation data firm, reported that loads available for dry vans, the most common type of tractor-trailers used for shipping consumer goods, fell 28% in April while capacity on the market was up 1.7% on a year-over-year basis.

Eaton Corp. , the sales leader in heavy-duty truck transmissions, predicted that organic sales from its vehicles unit will fall 10%-12%, after earlier predicting that sales would drop 7% to 9%. The company lowered its outlook for the business after concluding there are at least 20,000 heavy-duty trucks built last year that are still sitting on dealer lots.

Engine maker Cummins Inc. said on Tuesday it doesn’t expect any improvement in the truck market later in the year. It now expects heavy-duty truck production in North America to be at 210,000 vehicles this year, down 5% from its earlier view and down 28% from 2015’s actual volume. Cummins’ first-quarter sales of diesel engines to the heavy-duty truck market dropped 17% from a year earlier to $631 million.

Worst Yet to Come

CCJ reports Sagging truck orders ‘will probably get worse before it gets better’.

Last month was the worst April for Class 8 truck orders since 2009 according to preliminary data released by FTR Wednesday.

North American Class 8 truck net orders fell for the fourth consecutive month in April to 13,500 units, down 16 percent month-over-month and 39 percent year-over-year.

Don Ake, FTR’s vice president of commercial vehicles, says “surprisingly low” orders across the board were weak as the Class 8 market tries to find the bottom of this cycle.

Kenny Vieth, president and senior analyst for ACT Research, says the blame for low orders was widespread.

” … an ongoing overcapacity narrative, a resulting weak freight rate environment, softness in late-model used truck values, and excessive new vehicle stocks,” he adds.

Large Truck Sales vs. Recessions

Variant Perception reports Peak in Heavy Truck Sales Point to Cyclical Pain.

Heavy truck sales are oddly a good leading indicator for the economy. It is odd because a lot of industrial production is coincident with the business cycle. However, if you go back over forty years, you can see that recessions have always been preceded by a decline in heavy truck sales. This is particularly true if the increase in truck sales is very large. Today, truck sales are not far from where …read more

Merkel Reverses Course, Now Wants To Protect German Borders From Immigrants

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

With her country's political landscape shifting significantly before her, Angela Merkel has now put her political hat on in order to survive politically in Germany.

As France 24 reports, Angela Merkel is urging European Leaders to protect the EU's external borders or risk a “return to nationalism.” Merkel said the “freedom of movement” in Europe is at stake as it deals with the worst migration crisis since WWII.

The irony of course, is that it wasn't very long ago that Merkel was vehemently defending her open borders policy, saying:

“I am in favor of showing a friendly face of Germany. This is my open-arms policy

The 180 degree turn on the issue is of course explained not by a change of heart, but by a change in sentiment within Germany.

As we reported earlier, Germany's AfD party is gaining significant popularity, and is on track to become the second most popular party in the country. The problem Merkel has is that the AfD party has a platform that is anti-immigrant, and anti-muslim, and the growing popularity of the party implies that these beliefs are starting to be held by the voters as well.

It won't be long now before the AfD surpasses SPD and becomes Merkel's newest headache to deal with. As she now sits on the complete opposite side of where the German people seem to be going on the issue of immigration, a dramatic policy change and increased rhetoric such as what was reported above can now be expected from Merkel.

German Study Proves It – 95% Of Greek "Bailout" Money Went To The Banks

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

I simply cannot stress enough how important Greece is to freedom, liberty and civilization across the globe. Greece is not a one-off, or merely a small nation in big trouble that holds little relevance for the rest of us. Greece is everything.

What is happening to Greece follows the exact same game plan of what will eventually happen to every other supposedly sovereign nation. First there is an explosion of debt. Then a crisis. Then a bailout. Then creditor imposed hardship is forced upon the average population, in conjunction with unlimited bailouts for the bankers and other oligarch criminals.

Finally, when a public which mistakenly believes it is living in a democracy exercises its right to national sovereignty, the sad truth is exposed. They are not a people living under a free political system.

– From last year’s post: This is Sparta – 1,000 Bitcoin ATMs are Coming to Greece

A recent German study just confirmed what tens of millions of Greeks already knew. That they are a people fully conquered by criminal mega banks and the corrupt politicians and technocrats in their employ.

Get ready for another epic screw job this summer.

From Ekathimerini:

Some 95 percent of the 220 billion euros disbursed to Greece since the start of the financial crisis as loans from the bailout mechanism has been directed toward saving the European banks. That means about 210 billion euros was eventually channeled to the eurozone credit sector while just 5 percent ended up in state coffers, according to a study by the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin.

“Europe and the International Monetary Fund have in previous years mainly saved the banks and other private creditors,” concluded the report, published yesterday in German newspaper Handelsblatt. ESMT director Jorg Rocholl told the financial newspaper that “the bailout packages mainly saved the European banks.”

The economists who took part in the study have analyzed each loan separately to established where the money ended up, and concluded that just 9.7 billion euros – less than 5 percent – actually found its way into the Greek budget for the benefit of citizens.

“This is something that everyone suspected, but few people actually knew. That has now been confirmed by the study.
