Keith Olbermann Punishes Donald Trump: "I Am Moving Out Of Your Building"

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

We had a hard time deciding if the following rant written by the twice disgraced Keith Olbermann about, of all things, punishing Donald Trump by moving out of a Trump building (he is “getting out because of the degree to which the very name “Trump” has degraded the public discourse and the nation itself. I can’t hear, or see, or say that name any longer without spitting”) after dutifully making Trump richer for 9 years by paying his rent on time every month, was the product of some grotesqsue ghost writing by a 5-year-old, or a legitimate grievance, but ultimately we realized it was the latter.

Then we started laughing. We are confident everyne else will too after reading the following.

By Keith Olbermann, originally posted in the WaPo.

“I can’t stand to live in a Trump building anymore”

Okay, Donnie, you win.

I’m moving out.

Not moving out of the country — not yet anyway. I’m merely moving out of one of New York’s many buildings slathered in equal portions with gratuitous gold and the name “Trump.” Nine largely happy years with an excellent staff and an excellent reputation (until recently, anyway) — but I’m out of here.

I’m getting out because of the degree to which the very name “Trump” has degraded the public discourse and the nation itself. I can’t hear, or see, or say that name any longer without spitting. Frankly, I’m running out of Trump spit.

And, yes, I’m fully aware that I’m blaming a guy with the historically unique fashion combination of a cheap baseball cap and Oompa Loompa makeup for coarsening politics even though, out of the two of us, I’m the one who has promulgated a “Worst Persons in the World” list for most of the past decade. That’s how vulgar this has all become. It’s worse even than Worst Persons.

This is the campaign of a PG-rated cartoon character running for president, interrupting a string of insults the rest of us abandoned in the seventh grade only long enough to resume a concurrent string of half-crazed boasts: We’re gonna start winning again! We’re gonna build an eleventy-billion-foot-high wall! We’re not gonna pay a lot for this muffler!

All this coarseness is largely masking the truth that the Trump campaign is entirely about coarseness. Take away the unmappable comb-over and the unstoppable mouth and the Freudian-rich debates about genitalia, and there is no Trump campaign. Donald Trump’s few forays into actual issues suggest he is startlingly unaware of how the presidency or even ordinary governance works.

Of course that doesn’t preclude his election. A December study carried out with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst showed that Trump’s strongest support comes from Republicans with “authoritarian inclinations.” They don’t want policy, nuance or speeches. They want a folding metal chair smashed over the bad guy’s head, like in the kind of televised wrestling show in which Trump used to appear.

And it isn’t as though the American electorate …read more

"You Want A Bloodbath?!" New Video Surfaces Of Police Shooting Oregon Protester In Back

By Tyler Durden

On January 2, Ammon Bundy had an idea.

He would use the (re)incarceration of Dwight Hammond and his son Steven as a pretext for the takeover of a remote wildlife refuge. Then, once the facility was “secured,” the occupants would refuse to leave until the Hammonds were released and until Washington made concessions on state’s rights and land usage.

It would be a grand rekindling of the “Sagebrush Rebellion” and Ammon would make his father Cliven (who became a kind of folk hero after staging a jailbreak for his cows who had been imprisoned by the federal government for bovine trespassing) proud.

Of course we all know how Ammon’s “coup” turned out.

He and his compatriots camped out in a snowy shack for a month and Robert “LaVoy” Finicum ended up getting shot by police on the side of the road. Meanwhile America either didn’t understand the cause or else simply didn’t care because when asked to send “supplies” to the aggrieved occupiers the nation sent sex toys and penis-shaped gummy candies. That’s not an editorial comment on the merits of the cause – it’s just a straightforward account of what happened.

Anyway, there was still some controversy surrounding the death of “LaVoy” despite the fact that authorities released footage which pretty clearly shows Finicum reaching into his pocket, not once, but twice as police closed in. Officials would later say that in that pocket was this loaded 9 mm:

On Tuesday, county prosecutors ruled the shooting “justified and necessary” despite the fact that Finicum was shot three times in the back.

Here’s the autopsy report showing the three shots in Finicum #OregonStandoff pic.twitter.com/CQn7COKzkL

— Simone Del Rosario (@SimoneReports) March 8, 2016

Here is footage from inside Finicum’s truck synced with footage from police. We will leave it to readers to determine whether the shooting was indeed “justified and necessary.”

Finally, here are excerpts from The Oregonian’s account of the dramatic events that led to Finicum’s death:

As Robert “Lavoy” Finicum powered his Dodge pickup over Devine Summit on the state highway north of Burns, he spotted the police van idling on a U.S. Forest Service road.

Finicum glanced over at the state trooper in the driver’s seat as he went past.

He pointed a finger at him, as if to say “I see you” and kept going.

That likely was the moment Finicum realized he and his group wouldn’t make the community meeting planned that evening in John Day.

Less than 30 minutes later, Finicum was dead and four other leaders of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge takeover were in handcuffs.

Police knew the leaders planned to travel to John Day in Grant County to the north on the only direct highway there – U.S. 395.

They devised a traffic stop …read more

What Matters Most?

Via ConvergEx's Nick Colas,

Today we engage in a simple thought experiment: what 3 pieces of information would you need to confidently call the 2016 end-of-year level on the S&P 500?

A brief survey of senior Convergex traders yielded this list: year-end worldwide central bank rates, Chinese GDP growth in 2016, actual 2016 US corporate earnings, the winner of the U.S. presidential race, and the pace of increases in the Fed Funds rate for the year.

When we posed the questions to analyst friends, they added: 2016 U.S. wage growth, 2017 consensus corporate earnings (in December 2016) and any information about a significant geopolitical event. Everyone agreed oil prices were on the list.

All this pushes two other questions to the fore. First, what’s on your list, and why? And second, what’s not on any of these lists? Because maybe that’s what will actually move markets…

The 1920s were a period of immense technological innovation, but that didn’t stop many prominent thinkers of the age from believing that the living could speak to the dead. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the deeply rational Sherlock Holmes, wrote more than a dozen books on the topic. French Nobel Prize winning physiologist (awarded 1913) Charles Richet was the original “Ghostbuster”, coining the term “ectoplasm” decades before Bill Murray ever got slimed. Even Thomas Edison thought about building a telephone to reach into the next world.

As a result of this air of respectability, tens of thousands of mystics plied their trade in Europe and the U.S., including one Mary Carter of Cincinnati Ohio. She had an especially powerful shtick in her repertoire. During a séance an assistant would place a small clean chalkboard in a box on the table where participants sat. They would ask their questions of people in the afterlife, and when the box was opened the slate would reveal the answer. A neat bit of magic, if nothing else.

In the mid-1940s, her son Albert Carter borrowed the idea to create a toy that is still popular today: the “Magic 8 ball”. Essentially, it was two dice with words (‘Yes’, ‘don’t count on it’, ‘it is certain’, etc.) printed on them, suspended in can of oil with a clear top. Ask a question, shake the container, and wait for one of the die to float to the surface with your answer. After he passed on, his partners licensed the idea to Brunswick Billiards as a give-away item to promote the brand. The container became the now well-known black sphere resembling an 8-ball.

Predicting capital markets action can, at times, feel much like using a Magic 8 ball. You ask a question, wait, and the market returns with an answer. Sometimes you like the answer, and sometimes you don’t.

But what if that plastic black ball became a crystal one instead? Those are …read more

The "Smart Money" Is Quietly Getting Out Of Dodge: Sells For A Sixth Straight Week As Buybacks Soar

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

One week ago, when looking at the latest BofA client flow trend monitor,

So, like last week, we again know who is selling but what about the other side: was it just shorts covering who are providing the bid? The answer is no: “buybacks by corporate clients accelerated last week to their highest level since August, and are tracking above levels we saw this time last year, though below levels we observed in 2014 (see chart below). Clients sold both large and small caps last week, but continued to buy mid-caps—which have seen the most persistent buying by our clients over the last several years despite being crowded and expensive.

In retrospect, this makes a lot of sense: with the debt market for all but the moost pristine issuers jammed up, corporations who have relied on debt-funded buybacks to push their price higher have had to step on the accelerator in their buyback activity, to give the impression that the market is back to stable, which in turn could thaw the frozen debt market, allowing them to issue even more debt, whose proceeds they would then use to buy back even more stock. Indeed, the lower the market dropped, the greater the buyback activity had to be to offset the natural selling by the smart money.

This is what we said one week ago:

In other words, buybacks are on pace to surpass buyback records, and since the debt issuance pipeline has to be unclogged or else risk the failure of hundreds of billions in bond bond refinancings in the coming months not to mention the collapse of the bond-buyback pathway, companies have scrambled to put a “risk on” mood on the market by repurchasing their stock, so that these same companies can issue more debt, so that they can buyback even more debt in the future.

Since then absolutely nothing has changed, and here we are now: 6 weeks of consecutive derisking and selling by hedge funds, institutions and private clients soaked up by what is now a record short squeeze, as well as a near record buyback spree to mask the fact that the “smart money” is bailing.

We leave it up to readers to decide just how healthy is this “rally” if the smart money has been selling for nearly 2 months, and where the two primary buying groups are corporations themselves, and shorts squeezed into covering positions.

There Is No Spending Growth

ABOOK Mar 2016 Thompson REuters SSSI

Submitted by Jeffrey Snider via Alhambra Investment Partners,

The fiscal year for retailers ended in January with nothing like what it was supposed to be. Still, as always, the suggestions remained that a rebound in consumerism would be before too long. If it wasn’t to be evident right away in February, the start of the 2016 fiscal year was at least supposed to be back in the plus column. Last week, Thomson Reuters noted the starting weakness and all the hoped for blizzard implications.

The American retail shopper still isn’t in a free-spending mood. The Thomson Reuters Same Store Sales (SSS) Index forecast for February 2016 indicates a small gain of 0.5%. Excluding the drug store sector, the SSS growth rate is expected to fall to an estimate 0.3%.

A year ago, the final February SSS index registered a much healthier gain of 1.2% and the ex-drug indicator was up 0.6%. However, a 3.0% increase is considered a sign of a robust retail economy.

At least the SSS index is expected to be in positive territory, compared to January’s negative results, partly thanks to an improvement in winter weather. [emphasis added]

Among the many prominent victims of the “unexpected” weakness was Macy’s. Not only have same store comps declined four straight quarters, it has left the company with enormous inventory stocks – historically so.

Although the retailer beat its earnings estimate, the most worrisome metric from this iconic company is inventory days. During the fourth quarter ended Jan. 31, this key figure went from 172 to 192 days, its highest level since we started tracking this metric in 1991. It’s also much higher than the industry average median of 114.1, which means that a lot of Macy’s merchandise is sitting on the shelves. The retailer also reported a Q4 same store sales (SSS) result of -4.3% — the fourth straight quarter of negative SSS.

In other words, retailers are stuck at almost a contradiction. They want robust sales growth, and analysts are expecting that to come in relatively short order, but in order for the retail sector to get there it will need to clear inventory likely at significant (further) discounts in order to rebalance. And they need consumers to cooperate by being especially interested in all this discounted merchandise.

Consumers were already absent in January:

January is usually clearance month for retailers seeking to attract shoppers again after the busy holiday season. This year, it looks like weakness in the December scene carried over into the New Year. The Thomson Reuters Same Store Sales Index forecast for January 2016 is for 0.2% growth overall and for 0.0% growth excluding the drug store sector. Both figures are significantly lower than the January 2015 actual retail growth rate of 1.5% overall and 0.6% ex-drug.

We are seeing that slow holiday sales added more clearance merchandise to January’s inventory. In addition, when cold weather finally arrived in the …read more

Where Have We Seen This Before: Hungary Central Bank Will Prop Up Economy By Boosting Stock Market

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

While most western central bankers are slowly, if grudgingly, admitting that everything they have done since the start of the “most hated rally in history” has been to create precisely this rally (also explaining why it remains so deeply “hated” as none of it is in any remote way natural) at least in Hungary they are dead honest from the onset, that when it comes to propping up the economy it all starts (and ends) with the stock market.

According to Reuters, the Budapest stock exchange, now majority-owned by the central bank – just a few conflict of interest there – approved a new strategy on Wednesday to boost new listings and attract new investors, helping the government’s efforts to buoy the economy.

The National Bank of Hungary, run by Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s close ally Gyorgy Matolcsy, bought a majority stake in the stock exchange in November, in a move seen as another state attempt to help prop up the economy. Actually, what the move does is provide the implicit guarantee of the central bank to risk assets, something that has been explicitly or implicitly the norm across most other countries for the past 7 years.

The symbiosis between the central bank and the government – as is the norm around the globe – is not new: Matolcsy has helped Orban’s economic policies with interest rate cuts and a massive funding for lending programme in the past three years.

As Reuters adds, the Budapest Stock Exchange’s new strategy for 2016 through 2020 aims to end a dearth of listings and reverse a fall in turnover seen over the past years, just as the central bank starts to trim back its massive cheap loans programme.

In turn, the central bank has now turned its attention to stocks: Hungary’s stock market index surged almost 44 percent last year, and is currently trading at six-year highs, but its capitalisation is lower than regional peers, new listings are scarce and volumes remain below pre-crisis levels.

This is how the central bank-controlled exchange plans to do it: “Right now the most pressing task is to help successful listings by having companies go public that meet the high quality standards required to strengthen investor confidence,” the bourse said in a statement. “It is also important that listings take place at pricing levels that provide room for future price increases.”

Basically Hungary is taking a piece of US monetary policy, where it will pump up the entire market, and also from China, where it hopes to force investors into “sure thing” IPOs, generating an overnight “wealth effect” for those who are allocated shares, if not for the bagholders who end up buying said shares in the open market.

Among the central bank’s other intentions, is that it wants to boost the number of large liquid shares to at least five from a current three to four, and use European Union funds to develop the capital market in close …read more

"At This Point" It’s Over: Establishment’s Last Hope Fades As Trump Leads Rubio By 23 Points In Florida

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

It just keeps getting worse for the GOP establishment.

The harder the Republican aristocracy tries to derail Trump, the more convincing his victories become, in a kind of self-fulfilling, status quo-destroying loop, and now that Michigan has proven just how divided the Democratic vote truly is, it seems even more likely that the brazen billionaire may indeed end up taking the oath of office.

The GOP’s preferred candidate was obviously Jeb Bush. The last name says it all. But that crashed and burned in dramatic fashion and so, the establishment shifted its support to Marco Rubio.

That worked out for all of one caucus. After a strong showing in Iowa, Rubio’s star was shot down by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who at the time was still a candidate. Here’s where it all fell apart:

On Tuesday, the upstart senator didn’t even show up. Michigan was a disaster for Rubio and now, the latest poll from Quinnipiac University shows Trump beating him in his home state by 23 points.

As Politico notes, “Rubio’s campaign is working nonstop to try and win the state. The Florida senator has essentially camped out in Florida, doing back to back events throughout the state.”

But it won’t matter. Just like it didn’t matter in New Hampshire. Or South Carolina. Or Alabama. Or Massachusetts. Or Michigan. Or anywhere else.

It’s over. The only way to stop Trump now is for the deep state to literally step in and nullify the electorate’s decision on the excuse that Americans have simply lost their minds in a (hopefully) temporary bout of nationalistic, frustrated insanity.

Which brings us to a rather disturbing conclusion: democracy in America is going to be hijacked either way. Either Trump capitalizes on the country’s deep-seated frustrations and fears to capture an office he probably isn’t prepared to hold (and we honestly don’t mean that in a pejorative way), or else the political and business establishment simply denies the will of the people and refuses to allow him to become commander-in-chief.

Anyway, that’s another discussion. The point for now is this: Marco Rubio is about to get “schlonged” in his home state by 20+ points. And that, in and of itself, says a lot about the mood of the American electorate.

Trump himself summed it up best: “At this point it’s pretty tough for anybody to do anything.”

Yes Mr. Trump, “at this point”, it sure is.

Florida Poll

Wholesale Trade "Gap" Reaches Record High As Sales Tumble, Inventories Rise

Find The Lowest Price HERE

By Tyler Durden

Worst.Case.Scenario. In 24 years, the ratio of wholesale inventories to sales has only been higher than the current 1.35x once – at the peak of the recession in the last financial crisis. Wholesale sales tumbled 1.3% MoM (worse than the -0.3% exp) and inventories rose 0.3% MoM while expectations were for a drop of 0.1% (inventories over sales difference rose from $143.6BN to $151.2BN in one month, a new record high.) And finally, automotive inventories rose to 1.78x sales – the highest since the crisis.

Keep stacking, despite tumbling sales…

Which leaves us firmly in the “recession imminent” section of the business cycle…

And there has never been a wider absolute spread between inventories and sales…

And as far as the automotive sector – that bubble may have a problem…

This cannot end well.
