Learn How I Lost 150 Pounds in Just 14 Months

Find The Lowest Price HERE

This is not just another fad diet book ? of which fill libraries, bookstores, and the internet, but the true story of how I lost 150 pounds in about 14 months (and kept the pounds off). A story, which I believe anyone who can walk, will benefit from.

First let me back up a bit and explain how a middle-aged 6′ 0″ male with a medium to large frame got to be 335 pounds. Well, it wasn’t hard and didn’t seem to take all that long. It was eating lots of fast food, burgers, and little to no exercise over the course of a few years. Sound familiar? In my 30’s and 40’s I was fairly active with scuba diving and just in my job itself. Then all of a sudden my job changed to where I sit at a computer eight hours a day (and still do), instead of being a busy technician building and testing things.

With age also came the slowdown of my body’s metabolism (I am now 54), coupled with a sit down job and eating lots of fatty burgers and other high calorie meals. Especially bad was eating big meals just before going to bed. It didn’t take long to find myself at 335 pounds. I blew up like a big fat whale and my huge belly hung way over my belt line. I had to buy 3X shirts and 50″ waist trousers to go around my bulk. I looked and felt just awful.

The time came when I finally said enough is enough! I was not feeling good, was out of breath all the time, and could hardly walk up the stairs to the bedroom. I went out and bought a good digital bathroom scale and weighed myself the next morning (undressed and after using the bathroom). The max limit on the scale was 330 pounds. The scale gave me an error message (a big fat capital E). That meant I was heavier than 330 pounds! Oh my God I thought! It can’t be! That morning, I weighed myself at work on the shipping scales. My weight was about 340 pounds fully dressed and after eating breakfast. That meant my true morning weight was around 335 or so.

Steps I took to lose the pounds…

I knew I didn’t want (or could afford) to buy expensive exercise equipment. Nor did I want to spend a lot of money to join a health club. There had to be a better way. I did some research on the internet about aerobics and metabolism (the rate at which the body burns fuel) and came to the conclusion the answer to my weight problem was to increase my metabolism through aerobic exercise, and by changing my eating habits. The strict definition of aerobic is “with oxygen”. The body uses oxygen to burn fuel. Aerobic exercise improves oxygen consumption by the body and burns fuel more efficiently. I learned that aerobic exercise (like walking at a brisk pace for 20 or more minutes without stopping), will increase the body’s metabolism (perhaps up to several hours), even after you stop exercising. This is just one of the added perks of aerobics.

I would encourage everyone reading, to search the internet on “metabolism” and “aerobics”. There is much more information there than I can possibly put here, or need to. The information is abundantly available ? no need for me to re-invent the wheel.

After getting freaked out when my new digital bathroom scale went “Tilt”, this is what I did…

1. I created a spreadsheet on my home computer so I could track and record my weight each Saturday morning (you can choose any day you wish, as long as you are consistent on when you weight yourself). Once a week is best.

2. I researched the internet about losing weight, and learned about metabolism, aerobics and aerobic exercise (and how they affect the body and calories). I figured I should be about 180-185 pounds for my height and frame, so I adjusted my daily calorie intake for that body weight. No special diets to speak of, just calorie intake adjustment, although I do try and eat healthy foods most of the time.

3. I invested in a good pair of walking shoes. This is critical!
4. I measured out one mile (using the odometer of my car), and timed how long it took me to walk one mile at a brisk pace (brisk pace meaning walking fast enough to elevate my heart and respiration rate). It took me 20 minutes to walk one mile. A 20-minute mile is not all that fast, but fast enough for someone weighing 335 pounds. And 20 minutes is the minimum workout time for aerobic exercise to be beneficial to the heart. My course was nothing more than the sidewalks of my neighborhood. Partly homes and apartments, and partly businesses.

5. I walked one mile per day, everyday, for about the first month (a 20-minute walk after dinner). I noticed my energy level was building and I felt better. After about the first 10 days, my digital bathroom scale began to give me a number instead of the big fat E error message. Definite progress!

6. The second month I increased my distance to one and a half miles a day (or a 30-minute walk after dinner). The soreness in my legs gradually disappeared.

7. I continued this pattern of increasing the distance by one-half mile until I was up to six miles per day (doing three miles before work and three miles after work). Six miles a day may be a bit extreme, so you may want to adjust your walks accordingly. But it worked for me and got to the point where I could walk three miles without breaking into a sweat. The pounds melted off!

8. After I lost nearly 100 pounds, I scaled back to four miles a day (two before work and two after work). I walk the miles faster too, about a 17-minute mile).

9. After 14 months, I reached 185 pounds and that’s apparently where my body wants to be. I continue to walk four miles everyday, watch my daily calorie intake, and have stabilized at 185 pounds.

Do I still eat a big fat juicy burger and ice cream once in awhile? OH YES! I love that stuff! But I religiously weight myself each Saturday morning and my weight seems to be happy and steady at 185. I don’t deprive myself of the foods I love, but I have learned what, when, and how much I can eat and get away with. One has to experiment and adjust accordingly.

I look forward each day to my walks. In fact, I get a sense of accomplishment after each walk. A fringe benefit I guess. Another fringe benefit is that walking is a great stress reliever… especially after a hard day at the office. All in all, I am in much better health. That 150-pound barbell I was carrying around all day is gone. My heart and cardiovascular system is much healthier… all due to walking.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits (other than the obvious health benefits) is that the people in the neighborhood and the storekeepers stop me all the time and comment on how I look. These are the people who would see me walk by their homes and stores each day. They saw a once very fat person transformed into a thin person.

The bottom line…

I was sick of being obese and I knew it was killing me and that I needed to do something and quick. I was a sure candidate for a heart attack or stroke. After doing a little research, I found the best way for me was aerobic walking coupled with a change in eating habits. There other types of exercises that will work too, but I believe nothing is as good for the human body then walking. The benefits are enormous and the cost is, well, the price of a good pair of walking shoes and comfortable clothes. It’s enjoyable too! Forget those expensive boring indoor treadmills! Go for a walk in the great outdoors!

If you can walk, have a place to walk, by all means go for it! If you are like me, you will increase your energy a hundred fold. Start off slow at first if you are way out of shape, a few minutes a day. Walk briskly and swing those arms. Increase until you can do a mile, then a mile and a half, and so on and so on until you reach your goal weight. This is a lifelong commitment, so don’t stop after reaching your goal weight.

My family and friends at work all say I am half the man I used to be. They are not very far off! I went from wearing 3X shirts and 50″ waist trousers, to wearing large shirts and 34″ waist trousers. Yeah, I had to buy all new clothes but I didn’t mind the expense one bit.

Take care and happy walking.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery

Find The Lowest Price HERE

Gastric bypass surgery comes in many forms but the most popular are combination-techniques that shrink the stomach by stapling off a small section and shortening the small intestine by reattaching it at a lower point where fewer calories will be absorbed.

Gastric bypass surgery and other bariatric procedures were traditionally performed with large incisions but laparoscopes have changed that resulting in lowered risks of many potential complications. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a less-invasive technique involving several small incisions in the abdomen through which surgical instruments are inserted. The laparoscope (camera) is also inserted inside the abdomen so the surgeon can see.

The benefits of Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery are smaller scars, lower risk of hernias, and faster recovery compared to traditional large incision gastric bypass surgery. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery cannot be used, however, if the patient weighs over 500 pounds. A doctor may recommend a short-term weight loss procedure like mouth-wiring to lower the weight of the patient to 400 or less so laparoscopic bypass surgery can be performed.

As in any surgery for weight loss, potential candidates should remember that Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is not a miracle cure and will involve a 90-minute to 2-hour surgical procedure, a 3-6 week recovery time, and a lifelong commitment to a healthier lifestyle. The risks of the surgery include infections, bleeding, and respiratory problems. It may be difficult to eat anything for the first few weeks after surgery without feeling uncomfortable and it will take 6-8 weeks before you are able to digest proteins or complex carbohydrates.

Patients who follow guidelines can reasonably expect to lose at least 50% of their excess weight over a 12-18 month period and have retained that weight-loss by at least 70% by ten years after the surgery.

Keeping a Healthy Weight

Find The Lowest Price HERE

These days, more and more people are placing importance on keeping physically healthy. This can be seen by the amount of people who are joining gyms and sports clubs, going on diets, and spending on private health insurance. One of the biggest areas of concern in this area for women is keeping a healthy weight, this is because it not only effects their overall level of physical health, but is also recognised as playing an important role in mental and emotional well being, and self perception as well.

Most people know that being both over weight and under weight are not good for you, but health is about far more than just body weight. Things such as your family medical history, your genetic predispositions, how much you drink or smoke, what type of food you eat and how much exercise you get all have a major impact on health. There really is no ideal weight therefore that you should be seeking on purely health grounds.

Using your weight as a measure of health therefore is not particularly useful. Obviously there are levels that will definitely be too high or too low, but within these limits, there is a huge range of healthy weights that people will fall into. Much of the worries that people feel regarding their weight are more to do with media images and glamorous advertisements than on what is considered healthy. We are surrounded by images and conceptions of beauty that distort our idea of what a healthy body should look like.

Many media images actually show people who are under weight, sometimes considerable underweight, and do not represent a healthy standard or good example to measure us against.

If you are genuinely concerned about health, then weight loss should not be the ultimate goal of all fitness efforts. You should try to cut down on cigarette and alcohol consumption, eat healthy food, get a reasonable amount of exercise, and generally take care of yourself. You do not need scientific advice and a professionally designed eating and exercise schedule. More likely what you need is common sense simple changes like snacking on fruits sometimes, walking to work, and visiting your doctor when recommended.

Doctor check ups are recommended at varying intervals depending on your age and health circumstances but it is wise to keep up to date with these checkups and not to fall into the trap of constantly procrastinating. If the cost of doctor visits is a serious issue that causes you to skip visits, then maybe you should consider a health insurance plan that will cover such checkups and just charge you an affordable monthly amount.

Journaling Your Way To Weight-Loss

Find The Lowest Price HERE

Many of my diets have been unsuccessful over the years. I’m not proud of that fact, but I do feel that many of my failed diets have taught me valuable lessons. It is extremely important to try to learn something from each diet that goes south. If you don’t learn anything, your mistakes will be repeated.

One of the best ways to learn from your mistakes is to start writing in a journal. A journal is a personal tool, and I wouldn’t normally tell you how to use one. But I feel I must share with you some of the ways I learned to use my journal.

For starters, write down everything that you eat, as you eat it. This may seem strange, but as I’ve mentioned before, many of us do actually forget some of the things we eat during the day, especially the small stuff. This is especially true if we are continually snacking. Do you remember how many handfuls of Sugar Frosted Flakes you munched on today? Was it two? Or was it more like nine? You must be precise in order to gain any benefit from this technique. Don’t write down that you ate “some” M&Ms. Write down that you ate “three handfuls” of M&Ms. At the end of the day, you can take out any calorie counting booklet and add up your total calories for the day. You can be the judge. How many calories did you consume? Was it a good day, or a bad day? If it was a bad day, which items made it so? Can we cut back on that tomorrow? Great!

Don’t cheat, and don’t fudge (no pun intended). If you try to pretend that you didn’t eat all that ice cream last week, and you tell your friend that you stuck to the diet but still gained weight, then you have more problems than just being overweight. Most of my friends can tell when I’m lying anyway.

If you can’t be honest with your friends, you have to at least be honest with yourself. If you aren’t honest with yourself, that’s called denial, and that will do nothing but continually frustrate you. When you weigh-in, you will find that the scale remembers everything you ate. A record of where you slipped up on your diet is priceless information. Don’t deny yourself that feedback.

A second type of journal entry could be your weekly problem log. You only need to fill out this log for weeks that you didn’t lose weight. You need only summarize what you feel are the reasons you did not lose weight this past week (stress, holidays, a sale on brownies, etc.). Here is a sample log:

PROBLEM LOG
WEEK 3: I ate an entire chocolate bunny, or two.
WEEK 7: I thought the chocolate sauce was nonfat.
WEEK 9: Chocolate. Never mind what, just chocolate.
WEEK 11: We had no trick-or-treaters, and I ate all the fun-size Snickers because they were bothering me as they lay there.

Trends often emerge within a problem log. In this case the trend is chocolate. The appropriate correction is to eat less chocolate, preferably no chocolate. Yes, life is unfair.

The challenge then is finding ways to lower your intake of chocolate. The best thing I could do to help myself is to stay away from 7-Eleven stores. We all have our secret little places that we go for our “fixes.” Resist the urge to go to them and pretend you need a vegetable fix, or a fruit fix instead. Take a big bite out of that carrot and say out loud, “Yes, oh I needed this so much.” Make sure no one is within earshot first.

Not everybody’s problem log will be filled with “chocolate” entries. Some people will drink too much alcohol (oops… multiple problems), while others will eat too much junk food. Others will drink a 12-pack of soda per day, while still others will eat as much meat in a week as some of us do in a year. The point is that by using a log in this way, you will be able to see which items or events most severely affect your weight-loss.

A journal can also be used for keeping track of your exercise sessions. Keep track of how many hours you exercise per week and what type of exercise you perform. It is also helpful to have a weekly exercise goal in mind as you journey through your diet. This can be expressed in calories or in hours, whichever suits you best. The goal is a constant reminder to include exercise in your weight-loss plan.

One of my favorite ways to use a journal is to regroup and reorganize after a terrible weigh-in. I tend to write down whatever I’m thinking at the moment just to get the pen rolling. Often the first few words reveal my mood, and I’m not often a happy camper. Here are some examples:

January 6 – Okay Johnny, what happened? Wait, let me guess, you shouldn’t have eaten at McDonald’s three times this week. When will you learn to stay away from those places? Are you on my side? Or are you just going through the motions?

January 27 – Let me just say one thing…WHAT’S WITH THE FOUR PIECES OF CAKE AT THE WEDDING? What could you possibly be thinking? Your plan was to stick with vegetables this week. Did you temporarily forget that cakes are not in the vegetable family? What can you do to keep away from that junk next week?

February 17 ? Ok, this week is shot. Seems to me that we’re having a lot of blown weeks, aren’t we Johnny? And didn’t we have this same conversation a few weeks ago? Yes, I think we did? Wait! Maybe there are some other areas of your life that we could screw up too. Why should we limit it to dieting…

You might think I’m being a bit harsh on myself in these journal entries, but I get all of my frustrations out right then and there. I usually stop being upset with myself after a few paragraphs, and then I write some positive goals for the upcoming week.

Keeping a journal of your thoughts and reflections concerning your diet each day is also helpful. No topic that pertains to diets is off limits. Sample topics might include: Have you been drinking eight glasses of water each day? Did you blow it big time last night at dinner? Have you had a revelation or breakthrough in your diet strategy?

It is important to focus on what has been negatively and positively affecting your progress each week. It’s helpful to review the past week’s journal entries over the weekend or on whatever day you choose. This serves as input to your diet planning process. Throw out what doesn’t work, and welcome whatever does work for you. As you reread your journal, you may be surprised at what you have written. Was that really you who wrote that paragraph three weeks ago? Did you really eat all that in one day? Or “My God, I’m so paranoid.” You’ll be amazed at how many states of mind you find yourself in.

Within your own journal, you can do more than write. I like to draw pictures of the restaurants that are safe to visit, and I like to draw pictures of and make lists of the foods that I can and cannot eat, separated by a big thick impenetrable line that I drew and did not dare cross. I even tried to draw an apple fritter at one time, but it didn’t look appetizing. It looked more like a poorly groomed, ugly hairpiece, but that’s not the point. I knew it was an apple fritter and I knew I couldn’t eat it. That type of stuff works for me; you must find out what will work for you.

Remember, however, that the journal won’t do the hard work for you. The journal can help you see trends in your eating behavior, but you are going to have to reverse the bad trends on your own. So please learn these lessons well, and if you need to start your diet over, like I have done many times, start over with conviction.

Join the Thin crowd ? Use Hypnosis to Help You Lose Weight!

Find The Lowest Price HERE

Losing weight can be hard. It doesn’t matter if you just need to lose a couple of pounds for a special occasion or if you need to lose a lot of weight to improve your general health. Sometimes, it can seem downright impossible to get on track.

Actually losing weight doesn’t just significantly improve your chances of living to a ripe old age ? it’ll also make you feel good now. You’ll look good, you’ll be able to wear the clothes you like and you’ll have more energy to live your life the way you want to. People will look at you in a different way and you’ll feel more confident. But, getting to this stage isn’t always easy.

You may start off with the best intentions and you may even lose some weight along the way. But, for many of us, this initial good start doesn’t go any further. The fact is that you’ll hit a plateau at some point here and then it’s hard to keep going. You may be exercising and you may be eating right but the weight just won’t go at the rate you want it to. So, the easiest thing to do is to simply reach for the chips and just resign yourself to NOT losing weight because you start to believe that you can’t do it.

Alternatively, you may try new diets all the time and actually lose weight. But, as soon as you’ve achieved your weight loss goal and start eating normally again the weight will creep back on. And the fact is that fad diets, pills and quick-fix solutions don’t just work in the long term ? they could also harm your health.

The thing to realize here is that weight loss is not just about what you do with your body and what you put in it. It’s also about what’s going on in your head. This is why more and more of us are turning to hypnosis as a solution. So, why does hypnosis work when every diet you’ve ever tried doesn’t?

The answer is simple. Hypnosis gets to the root of your issues with your weight and helps to cure you of bad habits. You may not even realize that you HAVE bad habits ? but if you are a yo-yo dieter that can’t keep weight off then the chances are you do!

Hypnosis is such a popular solution to weight loss nowadays simply because it helps you to subconsciously accept the eating habits that will get you fit and healthy. A good hypnotherapist, for example, will help your brain reject unhealthy foods and actually crave healthy ones. They can also help you conquer eating issues such as stress and comfort eating and can give you the confidence to believe that you can lose weight.

So, all you need to do is to relax, let the hypnotherapy do its work and then immediately start a new life with the kind of attitude towards food and healthy eating that will ensure a healthy weight loss. And, most importantly, because your hypnotherapy will work on core issues, the weight will stay off once you start to lose it. You don’t even need to leave your home to achieve your goals here as this kind of solution can be successfully delivered anywhere.

I Weight 500 Pounds!

The risks of the surgery include bleeding, infections, and respiratory problems. Generally, the procedure requires a three- to four-day hospital stay. After you go home, you need to follow strict dietary instructions. For the first few weeks after surgery, it might be difficult to eat anything without feeling uncomfortably full, and your stomach will still be very tender. It will take six to eight weeks before you are able to digest complex carbohydrates and protein (such as chicken, pasta, and dairy products) without vomiting. It will be difficult for you to digest large amounts of fat, alcohol, or sugar. Most patients lose an average of 10 pounds per month, and reach a stable weight 18 months after surgery.

If you weigh 500 pounds or more, your doctor might recommend a low-protein diet or the mouth-wiring procedure for a few months so that you can lose some weight before a gastric bypass can be performed. While your mouth is wired shut, you will lose weight quickly because your food intake, provided in liquid form, is strictly regulated.

Weight loss before gastric bypass surgery might be necessary because the endoscopy equipment is not long enough to accommodate the girth of a patient weighing 500 or more pounds. In addition, most operating tables can hold up to 400 pounds. Other risks, such as reaction to anesthesia, are also increased in patients who weigh more than 500 pounds, so wiring your mouth shut to promote weight loss might be suggested. However, wiring your mouth shut is only a temporary solution, usually only suggested for a few months. Then, the gastric bypass procedure and reducing and monitoring food intake are needed for long-term success.

Before such drastic measures are performed, there are a few qualifying conditions to be considered eligible for either of these procedures. You must be at least 100 pounds over your recommended weight and have exhausted all efforts to lose weight by reducing food intake, changing your eating habits, planning your meals, and exercising.

Keep in mind that there are no miracle weight loss cures. Any type of weight loss or maintenance regimen requires a lifetime commitment to be successful.

I Lost Weight Once…But It Came Back!

Find The Lowest Price HERE

It seems like most people can lose weight, but they seem to gain it back and sometimes gain more than they lost. I have done it a few times myself. Right now I have lost 9 pounds and I am wondering how am I going to keep those pounds from coming back. I still have 12 more pounds to lose, but it seems like these next few pounds are not coming off as easy.

Have I Discovered Something… Maybe I Have!

I am getting excited now, believe me this idea is developing as I write this article. I may have come up with a way to lose weight right before your eyes as I am constructing this article. We all know that losing weight lies in those few inches between our ears, the brain. Most diets we try help us lose some weight, but keeping it off is controlled by what our mind is telling us. If we allow our mind to tell us having ice cream each night before we go to sleep is ok, then we will have the ice cream.

Controlling That Mind…That’s the Object!

I don’t watch Oprah very often, but I do watch occasionally to see how she is doing with her weight. I just happened to check in last night and guess what, she has put a few pounds back on. She does this from time to time, but she always manages to drop the few pounds she gains. I think I know her secret. She exercises, and I know she stays away from certain foods, but I think the key to her success is the mind control. I remember when she began she kept the weight off for a long time, then she gained it back. The next time she lost the weight it stayed off except for a few pounds which she usually loses. I don’t remember what her exact words were after she lost weight the second time, but I am sure it was something to do with the mind.

Ready Set Go!…Time To Put It All Together, Are You In?

Here we go. If the mind is keeping us from losing weight and keeping it off, we need to change the way we think. The mind is a powerful thing, it can be difficult to change our thoughts. For example, you have heard of people trying to stop smoking, but they just couldn’t. Then they have a heart attack and receive a triple bypass, after the surgery they are able to stop. Their mind continued to tell them they wanted to smoke, but they realized if they didn’t stop they could die after they had the heart attack. We don’t want anything that drastic to happen to us to force us to lose weight, but there may be other ways. You see, we all want something to be easy. If our mind is asking us to eat now, we might be able to wait ten more minutes before we eat, that would be easy, but it would be much harder to wait 24 hours before we ate.

What we are going to do is fool our mind just a little. We are going to drop a few pounds maybe 5 or 10 pounds, that really shouldn’t be that hard, the trick is, that will be all the weight we are going to lose. After losing 5 or 10 pounds we will just be keeping the weight off that we had previously lost. It’s much harder to lose weight than to stay at our current weight. Will this work? I can’t say, I just got this idea as I was writing this article, but what is the worst that could happen? Even If You didn’t lose any more weight you would keep the 10 pounds off instead of gaining it back. You won’t be as stressed out, always thinking about how much more weight you need to lose. I don’t know about you, but I have talked myself into doing it. As of today I have lost all the weight I need to lose, from now own I will just concentrate on not giving back any of the weight I lost and if I lose more Great!

Good Luck!

It’s Never Too Late To Make Your Diet Resolution

Find The Lowest Price HERE

Many people make their New Year’s resolution to lose weight. While they start out with good intentions, far too often the weekly drudge of sticking to a diet can wear thin quite quickly and before they know it their good diet intentions have fallen away. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to stick to your diet resolution without giving up before the excess weight goes away.

One of the most important things you can do to ensure that you stick with your weight loss goals is to write a contract with yourself, promising to stick with the resolution that you have made. If you want to lose a specific amount of weight within a certain amount of time, be sure to include this in the contract along with what you specifically plan to do to lose the weight. Post the contract somewhere you’ll be sure to see it everyday.

Setting goals is an excellent way to make sure that you stay on track with your weight loss plans; however, it is important to ensure that your goals are manageable and not too broad in scope. Due to the fact that dieting can become tiresome very quickly, you may find it helpful to energize your diet with a new goal each week. This gives you something to work on, and even look forward to, each week. Examples of small goals you can set for yourself include starting an exercise routine, cutting out sodas, drinking more water, etc.

Small goals are also a great incentive to work your way up to larger goals, an important component of sticking to your diet plans. Rather than saying you plan to lose weight this year, instead make it a point to commit to losing a specific amount of weight within a definite time frame. This helps to ensure that you do not put off your weight loss plans indefinitely.

As with any major change in your life, it’s generally always easier to accomplish your goals when you have the help and support of friends and family. Make a point to inform those close to you that you are dieting and what you hope to accomplish. In addition, it’s always a good idea to let them know exactly what you’re doing to lose weight so they do not unintentionally sabotage your diet plans. The presence of a weight loss buddy who can keep you on track and motivated will significantly decrease the chances that you’ll give up before accomplishing your goals.

Most people function well under a rewards system and losing weight is no different, provided that you ensure your rewards support your diet and do not undermine them. While you may look forward to enjoying an ice cream sundae after reaching a weight loss goal, think of other rewards that you would enjoy and keep your diet intact. Consider rewarding yourself for every milestone you reach, such as every five pounds lost. Positive reward examples include a manicure, massage, new book/CD/DVD, new shirt, etc. Significant weight loss goals, such as 25 pounds or 50 pounds, could warrant a larger reward such as a weekend trip or something else meaningful.

It Starts with Bed-Dancing

This “Bed-Dancing” concept often gets a few chuckles… but I want you to stay with me on this one as I explain exactly what it is (and isn’t) and how you can incorporate this in your exercise routine today.

I’ll begin by expressing how essential Bed-Dancing was in my life right after I had the RNY gastric bypass bariatric weight-loss surgery: VERY ESSENTIAL. That’s shooting straight from the hip!

Definition of Bed-Dancing: “the exercise activity that incorporates established exercise movements while positioned on your back in the bed to minimize the stress and strains on joints and muscles when a person is morbidly obese.” This is the best brief definition I could come up with since I am nowhere near a Webster genius.

Right after my surgery, I knew that it was important to MOVE MY BODY and begin to exercise. The biggest benefit I saw at the time was that it increased my blood circulation that was necessary to help my surgical wounds to heal. This was my main motivation. And when I weighed 317 pounds, there was no way I was “eager” to incorporate an exercise routine because my body was so large, and my arthritis so painful, I just could not bear putting such stress on my joints and muscles at that heavy weight.

I had a master plan to put on my favorite “high-spirited” CD (Latin music makes me feel like dancing), put on my sweats, and I went into my bedroom as I announced to the household, “Don’t bother me for one hour….no matter what,” then shut the door. As I began to “dance” to the tunes, OH MY GOLLY… I couldn’t last more than five minutes! My incision hurt, my joints hurt, and I collapsed on my bed, falling deeper in disappointment that I could not see myself achieving an exercise routine.

But soon, as the Latin CD kept spinning, I found myself “moving” to the music while I was in bed… WOW… I then thought, “Hey, I can DANCE on my BACK!” So with legs and arms in the air flailing like a floppy fish… I discovered how someone who weighed 317 pounds COULD exercise… but not the traditional way… but by Bed-Dancing! Thus, the birth of my newly-found method launched me into a very SUCCESSFUL exercise routine that I could do often without putting stress on my joints!

But be cautious when you talk about Bed-Dancing to others… they automatically begin to chuckle at what you call the standard “bed activity” now. (blushing yet?)

What you need for Bed-Dancing:

? A bedroom with a bed and a bedroom door that you can shut so you can bed-dance in private. Be sure to announce to the household that this is YOUR TIME and they are capable of getting along without you for at least the length of a CD. If not, they are far too dependant on you!

? A CD that excites you into “dancing”. A CD is better over a cassette tape or radio because you can “program” your music selection to skip, repeat, or play at random your tunes according to what you want to dance to.

? An exercise outfit such as sweats, t-shirt and shorts, or even your slip. Since you’ll be behind closed doors, you can wear whatever you want. However, when you actually have an “outfit” set aside for exercise, the mind gets in gear and stays more focused on what you are telling it to do… and that’s EXERCISE.

? An attitude to do Bed-Dancing. This is vital too. Keep you movements simple but aggressive, meaning that you aren’t making complicated moves with your arms and legs, but rather you are making the simple moves in a forceful and deliberate way much as a tap dancer or ballet dancer uses simple moves but with controlled and deliberate body disciplines.

So as you can see, the equipment you need for Bed-Dancing is minimal and low cost since you already have most of what you need as these things are probably already around the house. If you lack in a dancing CD, go get one… most cities have “used” CD shops. And as for your exercise outfit, you can find sweats at your local thrift store. And if you like Bed-Dancing in your “unmentionables”, that’s okay too…. Whatever works for you!

Bed-Dancing helped me begin my “serious” exercise routine which eventually morphed into exercising on my feet and even to full-fledged real dancing again as the pounds fell off! I still Bed-Dance occasionally to get me “started”, then I’m up on my feet and going to town!
