This home brew amp put out 3KW the first time it was fired up. After tuning and a few mods it eventually did 5KW on the 11 meter CB band. It was created for mobile use! The rig? A 1963 Ford pickup with a small block chevy under the hood, a Dodge rear axle and a datsun 4Cyl engine in the bed to run the 12KW Genset that powered the AMP. The only thing in the cab was a basic Cobra 40 Channel CB. There was a remote start for the 4Cyl genny and the amp could be online within a minute or so. The driver amp was a solid state 500 Watt brick if I recall correctly. The output tube was an Eimac 3CX5000. Video was shot May 19th 1989.

I want to start looking into using solar panels at my home. For a small scale test to get started and learn more about it I wanted to set up a system of about 500 watts a day to run a lamp or two and maybe a radio or a cell phone charger. What would be the best way to go about this and what do i need to watch out for when selecting equipment?

First thing:  you need to correct your units.  A watt is a rate, like a mile per hour.  What you want is watt-HOURS, which a quantity like distance (miles).  You can get 500 watts out of something the size of a flashlight battery, but you’ll only get it for minutes at the most.

Getting units right is important; if you use units wrong, you can get answers that are completely misleading and waste a lot of money on something that won’t work.

If you want 500 watt-hours per day (say, 100 watts of loads running for 5 hours/day) you’ll need at least 100 watts of PV panel (after correcting for the losses due to the angle of sunlight!).  The average sun on a sunny day is equal to about 6 hours of the sunlight at noon, so 100 watts of panel will give you up to 600 watt-hours of juice per day, or maybe 500 Wh after losses.

It’s unlikely that your sun situation is going to be that good all the time (unless you live someplace like Phoenix!) so you’ll need more PV.  If you have 150 watts, you can go on 4 hours of noontime sun; 200 watts lets you get away with 3 hours.

Next is batteries.  You don’t want to discharge your batteries more than about 50%, so to coast for 1 day of no sun you need 1 kWh (83 amp-hours @ 12 volts) of battery.  Coasting for 2 days would be a good thing, so maybe 170 amp-hours of 12-volt deep-discharge battery would serve.  You can get suitable batteries for a starter system in lots of places.

The next thing is the charge controller and inverter (if any).  If you use 12-volt lamps, radio etc. you can dispense with the inverter and its losses.  You can also take all your gear camping with you!  The charge controller will help manage the batteries and prevent damage from overcharging.  Having an undervoltage cutoff or alarm would be good to prevent over-discharging.

I’m looking to set up a system soon.  My goal is to run emergency lights and a backup sump pump.

Going to China in 24hrs & just figured out I need it & I don’t have time to order it online.
I Don’t need a Converter Set or an Adapter. I have those. I need a STEP DOWN TRANSFORMER because I want to use a power strip for multiple appliances because I going to be in China for a while. Again there its a difference between a voltage converter and a Transformer.

I bought a 220 to 110 volt step down transformer in Singapore so I am sure you will be able to get one in China, probably cheaper than USA.
Plus they are very heavy to transport – especially on an aircraft.
Edit: They work in reverse so if you don’t sell it in China or abandon it possibly might find a use for it or sell it to someone who wants a step up transformer.

okay, so im sort of a newbie when it comes to car audio installation. okay, so im planning on buying 2 Lanzar 15 inch max pro subs. Each sub says it peaks at 2000 watts, so i figured i might as well buy a high powered amp, for max power. Then amp is a legacy 5000 watt 2 channel, bridgeable, amp. my suv has 1 500 watt amp already set up with one 10 inch sub. what i want to do is unhook the 10 inch sub, split the av cords to hook up my second beast amp with the 2 lanzar 15 inch subs. because i want to keep the speakers hooked up to the original amp so i do not need a amp with more channels, and i can focus all of the power into the 2 subs, for max bass. i know that i might need another battery to power all this, but i had help from a friend, and he said a capacitor should do the job, instead of buying a whole another battery. is this set up okay? ill provide links to the products im going to buy:

I would reccommend a red top batt and capacitor, capacitor helps sound quality but doesnt exactly resolve the battery issue with a 5000w+ system
